Colon Theatre was born due to the strict demand of a society which had become devoted to opera since the early XIX century. Materials used in its construction were imported from around the globe. Especially impressive is the “Salon de Oro” (Hall of Gold), where crystal chandeliers and opulent wall decorations create an elegant atmosphere. Occupying an entire city block, the theatre can seat 2,500 people while another 1,000 can stand and enjoy the operas, ballets and concerts. Different rooms of this imposing architecture masterpiece will be visited during the guided tour. Colon Theatre is an experience to be discovered! Afterwards, continue to your next stop. If you like literature you cannot leave the city without discovering a hidden treasure for book lovers: Ateneo book store El Ateneo Grand Splendid is one of the biggest bookstores in South America and certainly the most luxurious. Located in the ritzy Recoleta neighbourhood, El Ateneo is as splendid as its name and exudes Buenos Aires’s nostalgic elegance. The building originally housed the theatre Teatro Grand Splendid, designed by architects Pero and Torres Armengol in 1919. After years of popular shows, including performances by the famous tango singers Carlos Gardel and Ignacio Corsini, the Grand Splendid was converted into a movie theatre in the late ’20s, featuring some of the first sound movies shown in Argentina. Continue to Avenida de Mayo, your last stop will be at the famous Café Tortoni. Coffee is a ritual celebrated by the Tango, which can find an excuse in love, loneliness, politics, literature or sports. Café Tortoni is one of the most traditional cafés in Buenos Aires, and the oldest literati café situated at Avenida de Mayo. Surrounded by the Miniques Volcano and Cerro Miscanti mountain, the Miscanti Lake is a brackish water lake, meaning that is a has considerably higher salinity than a freshwater lake but not quite that of sea waters. Found on the northwest foot of the Miniques mountains, the lagoon was separated from Miscanti lake due to lava flow when the nearby volcano erupted. The lagoon has an altitude of around 4,120 metres. The waters of the Miniques lagoon and the Miscanti Lake are brackish. Due to the level of climate in the area, which is similar to that of the Atacama Desert, no glaciers can develop here.

Found at the heart of Salar de Atacama and part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, Laguna Chaxa is one of the most famous flamingo breeding grounds in the world. Set 2,300 metres above sea level, Laguna Chaxa is at a point where you can witness the division of this great lagoon into its multitude of salt lakes. From the lagoon, you’ll see the great salt crusts creating splashes of white on the landscape, making the perfect habitat for flamingoes to roam freely.

An ancient town steeped in history, Toconao is perhaps most interesting because of its purity; the town is known among locals for its mineral waters that are essential to cultivating a great variety of both native and Spanish fruits. Marking the centre of the town is the church and bell tower of San Lucas, both of which are National Monuments thanks to their age and preservation after the earthquakes. Today, the church is maintained by a group of nuns. The local craftsmen of Toconao are known for their hand carved volcanic stone sculptures and miniatures using stone from a nearby quarry.

Sitting at 4,320 metres above sea level El Tatio geyser field runs between the borders of Chile and Bolivia and is the third largest geyser field in the world, found at the foot of stratovolcanoes in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes. As dangerous as this may sound, there have been no volcanic eruptions here, just spouts of water and steam that are caused by El Tatio’s hydrogeological location. El Tatio is also part of the Altiplano-Puna volcanic complex which was the source of the last known super-eruption, which is estimated to have been 2,500,000 years ago.

The largest in the country, Hassan II Mosque is a momentous dedication to the Islamic religion. Its 60-storey-high minaret is topped with a laser, which points to Mecca, the birthplace of the prophet Muhammed – it is the tallest minaret in the world. Situated in the capital city of Rabat, Hassan tower is the minaret of an incomplete mosque. Construction began in 1195 and was intended to the the world’s largest minaret along with the mosque, also as the world’s largest. However, the death of Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur in 1199 halted the construction at 44 metres, 42 metres short of what it was intended to be. The mosque was also left incomplete with only the beginnings of several walls and 348 columns constructed. The Hassan Tower along with the incomplete mosque and the modern Mausoleum of Mohammed V form an important historical and tourist complex in Rabat.

Facing the Hassan Tower, standing tall on the Yacoub alMansour esplanade, is the mausoleum of late Mohammed V. Completed in 1971, it contains the tombs of the Moroccan King and his two sons, late King Hassan II and Prince Abdallah. The building is considered a masterpiece of modern Alaouite dynasty architecture, with its white silhouette, detailed features and topped by a traditional green tiled roof; green being the symbolic colour of Islam as within the holy scripture the Quran, it is associated with Paradise.

Along the Bou Regreg River, the Kasbah of the Oudayas was built in the 12th century, during the reign of the Almohad Caliphate. When the Almohads had seized Rabat and destroyed the Kasbah of the Almoravid Dynasty in the town, they began to reconstruct it between AH 544 and AD 1150. With the addition of a palace and a mosque, it was renamed it al-Mahdiyya, after their ancestor al-Mahdi Ibn Tumart. The Kasbah is now largely abandoned. The University, also one of the most highly revered places of worship in the country, is the oldest existing continually operating university in the world. The institution has been recognised by both UNESCO and Guinness World Records The grand building was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859 with another associated school. The building soon became one of the most notable spiritual and educational centres of the Islamic Golden Age, the first in the Islamic world. The university focuses its studies and historical texts on Islamic religious and scientific laws, alongside traditional Arabic linguistics and the study of ancient Sunni law. The architecture of the building has had many additions since it’s first construction over 1000 years ago, its original size was around 30 metres long, maintaining a rather simplistic design comparative to other Moroccan structures. However, the minaret was the first of its kind, forming the design and structure that is echoed throughout northern Africa.
Al-Qarawiyyin is the central point of focus for religious activity in Fes; it has been established through tradition that the mosques of Fes must hear the call to prayer from AlQarawiyyin before sounding their own call to prayer.

Jemaa El-Fna is a square and market place in Marrakesh’s medina quarter (old city). It remains the main square of Marrakesh, used by locals and tourists.  During the day, it is predominantly occupied by orange juice stalls, water sellers with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, youths with chained Barbary apes and snake charmers despite the protected status of these species under Moroccan law. As the day progresses, the entertainment on offer changes: the snake charmers depart, and late in the day the square becomes more crowded, with Chleuh dancing-boys, storytellers (telling their tales in Berber or Arabic, to an audience of locals), magicians, and peddlers of traditional medicines. As darkness falls, the square fills with dozens of food-stalls as the number of people on the square peaks. From 5pm each afternoon, the square is transformed with up to 50 food stalls which freshly cook a whole range of local foods and specialities. The food stalls in the market are licensed to cook and sell food. Additionally, most of them have been working in the square for many years, being handed down in the family for generations.

The most notable, and essential feature for all mosques, is the minaret, where you will hear the sound of the call to prayer echoing throughout the city 5 times per day. The design is particularly magnificent, its facade is undoubtedly one of the most photographed motifs of the city.

Peppered with natural hot springs, boiling mud pools and steaming geysers, Rotorua sits within one of the worlds most active volcanic regions. You can spike your adrenaline at Velocity Valley Adventure Park on stomach-dropping attractions such as static skydiving. Today, you’ll begin the day with an optional whale watching tour. Then, you’ll travel down the coast before heading inland through the North Canterbury wine region. If you have time on your hands, it is recommended that you take a detour to Hanmer Springs for a relaxing dip in its thermal pools. Arriving into Christchurch, you’ll see a new and improved city, steadily rising from the ruins of the 2011 earthquake.

Driving through the Waitaki Valley follow the hydropower generating system towards the east coast. Stretch your legs in Oamaru, known for its white stone buildings constructed with the local Oamaru Stone. If you were a little late off the mark this morning, you may get the chance to see the blue penguins come ashore at dusk. Continue south down the coast to Moeraki, and take a detour towards the beach to see the Moeraki Boulders, a unique geological feature well worth a look. As you arrive in Dunedin, take in the city’s Edwardian and Scottish heritage reflected in the buildings around the city centre – The Octagon.
