Quito City Tour

08:30 to 14:00
5 hours 30 minutes

Ecuador’s capital of Quito is a real treasure between the volcanoes of Pichincha, Cayambe and Antisana. At an elevation of 2830 metres, it is the second-highest capital in the world. It was the first city to be classified by the UNESCO in 1978 and its historical centre is the largest and bestmaintained in Latin America.

The tour will begin at 8.30 am so that you can get a good idea of the city. You will start at the Panecillo, a small hill over the city with a statue of the Quito’ Virgin, with a splendid 360º view.

You will then visit parts of Quito’s colonial centre such as the church of the “Compañia de Jesus”, the church of San Francisco and its convent museum, the Plaza Grande where you’ll find the Presidential Palace (Carondelet) and Quito’s cathedral. You will also see the district of La Ronda known, in particular, for its craftsmen.

El Panecillo

08:45 to 10:30
1 hour 45 minutes

To the south of Quito’s colonial old town, you’ll find the hill named El Panecillo which translates to the ‘little loaf of bread’. A major Quito landmark, El Panecillo offers marvellous views over the sprawling city of Quito and is topped by a 41-metretall aluminium mosaic statue of La Virgen de Quito.

Completed in 1976 by Spanish artist, Agustín de la Herrán Matorras, the statue of La Virgen de Quito depicts a Madonna stepping on a snake on a high pedestal looking over the city. This remarkable statue is made our of seven thousand pieces of aluminium.

The statue, however, differs slightly from its classic Madonna iconography in that is features wings, almost like an angel which is very rare for a Madonna statue. Climb up to the base of the virgin statue for an even more impressive view over the city and the surrounding volcanoes.

Church and Monastery of San Francisco

10:30 to 11:45
1 hour 15 minutes

The first church built in Quito, the construction of the Church and Monastery of San Francisco (or Saint Francis as it’s also known) began in 1535 and took over 100 years to complete; it is as old as the city of Quito itself!

Featuring over 3,500 works of art, a converted catacomb and stunning 16th-century architecture, the Church of Saint Francis is an imposing monument worthy of a visit. Inside the complex, you’ll find a temple, several chapels, 13 cloisters and a convent; it takes up almost two blocks of the Quito Old Town.

On approach to the church, you’ll notice its impressive doubletowered facade and its Renaissance and Mannerist architectural styling. Interestingly, the stairs up to the church are very wide and were purposely designed like this to make people watch their footing and bow their heads as they approached the church.

Plaza San Francisco is built on a slope; for years it was assumed it was built to model the shape of the earth, however a recent discovery by archaeologists showed that the church was actually built on top of a former Inca temple, hence its height over the other monuments in Quito Old Town.

This extensive construction has resulted in numerous architectural styles that blend together perfectly: the late Gothic arches missed with the Baroque features and Moorishstyle ceiling.

Not only is the building itself a marvellous sight, but inside there are some fascination works of colonial art including those by Manuel Samaniego and Caspicara, as well as works by artists from the Quito school. You can pay a little fee to climb the spiral staircase to the cathedral’s domed roof where

Cuicocha Lake

Cuicocha Lake, or Laguna Cuicocha as it’s known in Spanish, is a huge crater lake measuring three kilometres wide and 200 metres deep at the food of the Cotacachi Volcano which sits at 3,100 metres.

An hour’s drive from the city of Otavalo, the lake’s name literally translates to ‘guinea pig lake’ so is often referred to simply as this. The name arose from the two islands that were formed in the lake by later eruptions and resemble the appearance of the backs of two guinea pigs.

When the Cotacachi Volcano erupted long ago, the chamber emptied of lava causing the volcano to collapse in on itself at its foot creating this crater lake which then filled with water.

One of Ecuador’s best-kept secrets is the amazing hike circumambulating the lake; beginning at the final viewpoint of which there are several, it leads you across the ridgeline above the lake’s shore in a 14-kilometre circuit which can take around 3.5-5 hours.

Formed following the last eruption of the Quilotoa volcano in 1280 which left a gaping 3-kilometre-wide hole, Laguna Quilotoa is the name given to the huge vibrant turquoise body of water that filled this hole.

Situated at an elevation of around 3,800 to 3,900 metres, the lake is nestled amongst rugged countryside filled with hiking trails leading all over the Andes Mountain Range. The lake’s surroundings are home to many indigenous communities who still make a living farming the land as their ancestors have done for thousands of years.

The town of Quilotoa sits to the lake’s southwest and is one of the best places to view the lake. For those that want to get up close and personal, you can hike along the rim of the crater lake which is around 7.5 kilometres in length offering amazing views down into the deep lake.

You will have the chance to hike around the lake.

Ingapirca Ruins

13:00 to 15:00
2 hours

The largest known Inca ruins in Ecuador, Ingapirca was established by the Canari, who settled here long before the Inca Empire calling it Hatun Cañar. When the Incas discovered the region, Sapan Inca Túpac Yupanqui had troubles conquering it. Having tried multiple strategies, the Incas and the Canari decided to live together in peace. Despite the increase in the number of Incas residing here, the autonomy of the Canari was never compromised.

The first building created in this complex was the observatory, built while Inca Huayna Capac was the Sapan Inca (Incan equivalent of an Emperor), it was then that the city was renamed Ingapirca.

The most important building in the Ingapirca complex is the Temple of the Sun. As with most Inca buildings –and the rest of the complex–, the temple was built in true Inca style, using the topography of the land and the shape of the natural materials with the addition of slight chiselling or carving to
create a strong, seamless building. The Temple of the Sun was positioned in alignment with the solstices –the position of the sun which differentiates the beginning of Summer and Winter–, in a way that would cast light through its chamber on the top of the temple at a particular time of year. It could be
assumed that the sun would shine through the chamber to mark the beginning of a solstice, however, the chamber is no longer there.

There were numerous celebrations and ritualistic practices held here, because of its positioning, high in the mountains and the changing climate, both the Inca and the Canari believed that this was a place where you could be close with the gods and that they had led them here.

Situated on the largest island in the Galapagos archipelago, Isabela Island, the Las Tintoreras Islet is one of the most popular spots to visit in the region. Measuring no more than 900 metres in length and averaging 100 metres wide, Las Tintoreras is actually a group of islets or rocks which make up the area.

The name of the islet translates to “The Chasms” or the “The Rifts”; the meaning is derived from the multiple lava formation which makes small underwater canyons and rifts across this islet’s landscape. These nooks and crannies which are formed by the canyons make it a haven for wildlife which
excels in these unique habitats.

Reached only by traditional boat, the islet is surrounded by turquoise waters where you can spot sea lions, sea turtles, marine iguanas, rays and even reef sharks. The islet is also home to a white stone and a black stone beach where you can see colonies of sea lions and during nesting season, marine iguanas.
