Chile’s second-largest city after the capital city of Santiago, Valparaiso is a historical city on the Pacific Coast. Locally known as Valpo, this UNESCO World Heritage City sits at the heart of Chile’s bohemian culture.

A colourful, unique amalgamation of cultures and history, Valparaiso -often referred to as just Valpo-has long drawn poets, painters and artists to its streets. Its creative flair was contrasted against the regular stream of dockworkers and sailors that graced its ports.

In Valparaiso, you’ll wander the streets amid some of the best street art on the continent, marvel at crumbling mansions and find yourself lost in its unusual beauty. Valpo is a stone’s throw from both Viña del Mar and Reñaca, two of Chile’s most popular beaches.

Despite being built on hilly terrain, in Valparaiso, you won’t have to worry about climbing hundreds of steps to explore the city. Between 1883 and 1915, 15 elevators were built to carry pedestrians through the steep city.

Through its lively, hip, artsy and inspiring bohemian culture comes an abundance of arts and music events as well as architecture to admire. Valparaiso’s coastal cuisine also makes this city a foodie’s dream, with fresh seafood straight off the boat served at all the restaurants.
