This ancient Inca fortress was built during the Inca Empire in the 15th century and served as the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. During the Spanish conquest of Peru, Ollantaytambo was the famed stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance, and is known as one of the few places that Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle.

The approach to Ollantaytambo is guarded by huge, steep terraces. These terraces played a part in the battle to overcome the Spanish conquistadors as they were showered with arrows from the heights above and were unable to climb the terraces. Ollantaytambo is the second most wellpreserved archaeological site in the whole of Peru.

Machu Picchu Tour

10:45 to 13:45
3 hours

Machu Picchu was revealed to the world, when the famous historian, explorer and archaeologist Hiram Bingham inadvertently came upon the site whilst on an expedition in 1911. Initially, the importance of the citadel was overlooked, and only when he returned over a year later the true significance was realized. Perched high up on the edge of a cliff set deep in the high jungle of Southern Peru, Machu Picchu fabled ‘The Lost City of the Incas’ is truly a first-class destination for many world travellers.

Invisible from the Urubamba Valley below, Machu Picchu lay dormant for more than 4 centuries as it sat secluded 2,800 metres (4,000 feet) above sea level. It was considered to have been abandoned by the Incas at the time of the Spanish invasion and became something of folklore and mystery until it was re-discovered hidden and preserved in the dense jungle of Vilcabamba.

Today’s tour includes an expansive 2.5-hour privately guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage. Your expert guide will allow you to see all the main sectors including the Caretakers Hut, Temple of the Sun, Royal Tomb, Three Windowed Temple, Intihuatana / Solar Clock and the Inca quarry. Capturing Machu Picchu with your very own eyes is without exception an experience never to be forgotten.

Part of the Galapagos Islands, Espanola Island is also known as Hood Island, coined by the English after Viscount Samuel Hood.

Located in the southeast of the archipelago, Espanola Island like Santa Fe Island is considered one of the oldest islands dating back four million years. The island is renowned for the congregation of the waved albatrosses; during the breeding season, almost the entire world population inhabits Espanola Island.

On Espanola Island, you can also observe the mating dances of blue-footed boobies. One of the driest islands, Espanola is a rocky, barren and flat land scarce with vegetation. However, the large bays do attract good numbers of Galapagos sea lions.

As well as the albatrosses, boobies and sea lions, Espanola Island also has a few endemic species including the Española mockingbird, which has a longer and more curved beak than the other islands, and the Española lava lizard.

Highlights of Espanola Island include Gardner Bay (Bahia Gardner), a lovely stretch of white sand beach where you can spot sea lions and go snorkelling, and Suarez Point (Punta Suarez), where you can watch the massive waved albatross use the cliff as a runway before propelling themselves off into the sky to begin flying.
