Inca Pisac

13:00 to 17:00
4 hours

Situated on a mountain ridge above the town of Pisac, the ruins of Inca Pisac are some of the most impressive and finest Inca ruins in Peru. Of course, their size is nowhere near that of Sacsayhuamán or quite as stunning at Machu Picchu, but the fine stonework and terraces are some of the best in existence.

Situated 3,250 metres above sea level, the ruins of Inca Písac are made up of sections of urban plateaus connected by steps, paths and tunnels. On each side of the ridge, the ancient tradition of terraced farmland known as Andenes, descending into the valley below.

The city demonstrates the Inca tradition of building cities on high ridges and peaks as well as their water engineering expertise and irrigation. The city also incorporates the largestknown Inca cemetery, Inca baths, defensive walls, guarded gates and large religious and ceremonial areas.

You’ll enjoy a privately guided tour of the Pisac Ruins.

DAY 3: PRIVATE SACRED VALLEY TOUR - MARAS SALT PANS, MORAY & OLLANTAYTAMBO RUINS
PRIVATE SACRED VALLEY TOUR

This morning, you’ll head out on a privately guided tour to the Maras Salt Pans. A great photo opportunity where salt production has changed little over generations in a spectacular landscape. You’ll then visit the mysterious ruins at Moray, once used as an Inca crop laboratory. Your final visit is to the large ruins of Ollantaytambo, one of the last stands of the Inca Pachacuiti against the Spanish conquistadors in 1536.

18
Maras Salt Mines

08:00 to 11:00
3 hours

Hidden in the Urubamba Valley, Maras Salt Mines are a littleknown site left by the Incas, an impeccably well-preserved example of agricultural development in the region.

Amazingly still in use, the salt mines are just 100 metres from Maras, with stunning views out into the valley, the myriad of salt-crusted pools are evaporation ponds. The wind carries the sound of water trickling from terrace to terrace. From a distance, the terraces form an otherworldly site, with the salt appearing like dusted icing in contrast to the deep red of the hillside.

20
Moray Inca Ruins

11:00 to 14:00
3 hours

Like most Inca cities, Moray is perched 3,500 metres above sea level on a high plateau. However, Moray differs from other Inca ruins in that it mostly consists of several traditional terraced circular depressions measuring up to 30 metres deep in places and up to 220 metres wide.

These terraces were used as plant nurseries and as each level of the terrace had its own microclimate, it allowed seeds to develop in harsh, high altitude conditions. As with most Inca sites, Moray also had a complex water irrigation system.

Although we presume they were used for agriculture, the Moray ruins still hold a large mystery of why these fringedstone terraces were built. Compared to many other Inca sites, Moray is simple which suggests it may have been an experiment by the Incan people.

Grouped together in Peru’s lush Cuzco region, the ringed Incan ruins known as Moray have long been a mystery, but it is looking more and more likely that the nested stone rings may have been part of a large-scale agricultural experiment to see how crops would grow in other regions across the Inca empire.

20
Ollantaytambo Ruins

14:00 to 18:00
4 hours

Located at the far end of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, this precious gem of an archaeological site is known to few tourists. Located at 2,792 metres above sea level, Ollantaytambo is a great alternative to Machu Picchu and one of the most common starting points for the famous Inca Trail.

This ancient Inca fortress was built during the Inca Empire in the 15th century and served as the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. During the Spanish conquest of Peru, Ollantaytambo was the famed stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance, and is known as one of the few places that Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle.

The approach to Ollantaytambo is guarded by huge, steep terraces. These terraces played a part in the battle to overcome the Spanish conquistadors as they were showered with arrows from the heights above and were unable to climb the terraces. Ollantaytambo is the second most well-preserved archaeological site in the whole of Peru.

Machu Picchu Tour

12:30 to 15:00
2 hours 30 minutes

Machu Picchu was revealed to the world, when the famous historian, explorer and archaeologist Hiram Bingham inadvertently came upon the site whilst on an expedition in 1911. Initially, the importance of the citadel was overlooked, and only when he returned over a year later the true significance was realized. Perched high up on the edge of a cliff set deep in the high jungle of Southern Peru, Machu Picchu fabled ‘The Lost City of the Incas’ is truly a first-class
destination for many world travellers.

Invisible from the Urubamba Valley below, Machu Picchu lay dormant for more than 4 centuries as it sat secluded 2,800 metres (4,000 feet) above sea level. It was considered to have been abandoned by the Incas at the time of the Spanish invasion and became something of folklore and mystery until it was re-discovered hidden and preserved in the dense jungle of Vilcabamba.

Today’s tour includes an expansive 2.5-hour privately guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage. Your expert guide will allow you to see all the main sectors including the Caretakers Hut, Temple of the Sun, Royal Tomb, Three Windowed Temple, Intihuatana / Solar Clock and the Inca quarry.

Capturing Machu Picchu with your very own eyes is without exception an experience never to be forgotten.
