Located in Santiago’s historical centre on the equally-historic Plaza de Armas, the neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral was built between 1748 and 1800 followed by further alterations at the end of the 19th century, to which it owes its current appearance.

The seat of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile and the centre of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, many previous cathedrals in the archdiocese have fallen victim to earthquakes.

Slipping inside its grand wooden doors beneath its two towers, the Metropolitan Cathedral rewards you with a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. You can explore the cathedral and take in its exquisite baroque details which could have you captivated for hours.

A bustling, noisy, colourful and crowded market, Santiago Central Market buzzes with locals going about their daily shopping and tourists excited to witness this chaotic market.

Named one of National Geographic’s top ten food markets worldwide, Santiago’s Central Market is located in downtown Santiago and has been running since 1872. Designed by Chilean architect Fermín Vivaceta, the building is made out of Iron form Glasgow in Scotland.

Selling predominantly fish produce, the market is home to many restaurants selling delightful dishes and fishmongers selling seafood freshly caught that morning. For those visiting Santiago, experiencing Central Market is a must!

You will be picked up from your hotel in Santiago and driven to the Matetic vineyard in the Casablanca Valley. Matetic Vineyards

Matetic is one of Chile’s most noteworthy wine estates. The property spans 16,000-hectares and is located 60 miles west of Santiago amidst rolling hills and caramel-coloured fields.

Initially of Croatian origins, the Matetic family moved to Chile 100 years ago and eventually started a winery in 1999 on their own estate in San Antonio Valley. They practice a biodynamic agriculture in their vineyards which allows the grapevines to express their authentic character and preserve their natural balance.

Taking advantage of the cooler climate of the region, Matetic makes a number of wines such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the rarer Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Immerse in local cultures from small villages, relax in the natural hot springs, indulge in local flavours, and appreciate the fiery skies during the sunrise or the impressive starry nights.

Valle de la Luna

Just north of the Cordillera de la Sal, Valle de la Luna is part of San Pedro de Atacama; a desolate landscape that is the driest on Earth – some areas have not had a single drop of rain in over a hundred years.

Carved by wind and water over centuries, Valle de la Luna’s otherworldly formations have earned its title of “Moon Valley”, the most impressive of which is the great amphitheatre and the bizarre creation of erosion that has made the “Three Marias” that looks as though it has been made by man.

Valle de la Luna is famous for being one of the most beautiful sunset spots in Chile, however, it can be quite crowded at this time.

You’ll have the choice of several activities today.

DAY 6: EXPLORE THE ATACAMA: EL TATIO GEYSERS
EXPLORE THE ATACAMA

Your hotel is inclusive of a wide variety of activities you can choose to take part in. El Tatio is one of the biggest attractions in the country. It’s the largest geothermal field in the southern hemisphere, with small fumaroles and bubbling springs and fountains of water. You can visit in the car or on foot, while there are also many diverse trails and alternative routes that can be taken. Here it is possible to bathe in an artificial swimming pool specially installed in the geothermal field.

El Tatio Geyser

Sitting at 4,320 metres above sea level El Tatio geyser field runs between the borders of Chile and Bolivia and is the third largest geyser field in the world, found at the foot of stratovolcanoes in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes.

As dangerous as this may sound, there have been no volcanic eruptions here, just spouts of water and steam that are caused by El Tatio’s hydrogeological location. El Tatio is also part of the Altiplano-Puna volcanic complex which was the source of the last known super-eruption, which is estimated to have been 2,500,000 years ago.

Altiplano Villages

At the beginning of the Altiplano, there are some villages that still keep to the thousand-year-old traditions of the Lickan Anta culture, such as Caspana and Chiu-Chiu.

Caspana is located at almost 4,000 metres altitude and preserves one of the oldest cultivation systems in the region, within a privileged landscape that combines desert, oasis and the altiplano. Chiu-Chiu was regarded as the capital of Atacama la Baja, or Lower Atacama, the counterpart to the power centred in San Pedro, and boasts the oldest church in Chile, the San Francisco de Chiu-Chiu Church.

DAY 7: RETURN TO SANTIAGO
RETURN TO SANTIAGO

You’ll return to Calama airport for your flight back to Santiago. When you arrive, once more you’ll be taken to the hotel to rest for the night. You’ll have the evening free to explore Santiago to find somewhere for dinner. After your days of adventure, some rest will feel welcome.

Hike the Valle del Francés

This challenging ascent to Valle del Francés is considered one of the best trails in the park.

Follow the trail ascending through steep rock formations and, with some luck; you can witness the avalanches of the Glaciar Francés.

A little higher, we find impressive summits and immense granite walls, giving a 360-degree view of the heart of the Paine massif. This excursion is long because we have to cross the Lago Pehoé Lake in a catamaran, offering us a beautiful view of the Massif.

This challenging path is the most visited in the park and for a very good reason: the prize of being so close under the wonderful towers. The reward for your hard work will make you feel like you are in one of the famous postcards, right at the base of the towers, before a glacial lagoon, experiencing the 12 million years of history that sculpted them from the granite that they are composed of.

To reach this much-venerated location you will have to overcome many obstacles: an ascent of 800 metres, strong winds, changeable weather and a variety of ecosystems that will you put you to test. The feeling is unlike anything else!
