DELFIN AMAZON CRUISE DAY TWO

Today is your first full day on your Amazon jungle cruise. For the duration of your stay, all activities and guides are included. You’ll have the option to pick from a wealth of excursions including paddleboarding, kayaking, canopy walking, trail trekking and so much more. One of the most popular trips is to meet the extraordinary pink river dolphins on a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The pink river dolphin is a rare species found in the freshwater rivers of the Amazon near Iquitos, Peru.

45
Activities on the Delfin Amazon Cruise

09:00 to 18:00
9 hours

Explore your adventurous side.

All excursions are included with your cruise rate. For all short transport (such as from the vessel to land for hiking) and wildlife seeking excursions, you will travel via skiff boats. The skiffs are stable to ride and ready to navigate into the most hidden corners of the Amazon.

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is best appreciated in the early hours of the morning when wildlife is most abundant and active. Trail walks at destinations such as Fundo Casual will take you deep into the rainforest where your guide will point out amazing creatures and vegetation of the Amazon. A local native assistant may also accompany you in order to bring you closer to different animals such as frogs, snakes, and insects. These are light activities and we provide rubber boots and rain ponchos in case of inclement weather.

Native 16” River Kayaks are available in all the vessels. These kayaks make for excellent opportunities to paddle smoothly and silently into small creeks, tributaries, and lagoons. They have been specially designed with durability and stability for fishing trips, meaning that in the calm waters of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve you are able to gently row downstream.

Paddleboarding, available on Delfin I & II, is an interactive and exciting way to discover the Amazon. And because of the calm, often ripple-less waters of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, it is an activity suitable for all ages. The coolness of the river water over your feet while you brush past the banks, eyeing wildlife, is an experience you do not want to miss.

At a height of more than 85 feet (25 metres) and with a length of more than 1,580 feet (500 meters), the canopy walkway provides you with unparalleled views of the Amazon Rainforest, its wildlife and vegetation. High above the ground, you will encounter birds and other animals that cannot be seen from the jungle floors, with each layer of the canopy unveiling something new. It is one of the longest canopy walkways in the world, accessible to all and requires no special skills or equipment.

DAY 6: PRIVATE SACRED VALLEY TOUR - MORAY, MISMINAY COMMUNITY & OLLANTAYTAMBO RUINS
MORAY

This morning, you’ll head out on a privately guided tour to the mysterious ruins at Moray, once used as an Inca crop laboratory. You’ll then visit the Andean community of Misminay and share their tasks with local inhabitants, who still preserve ancient Inca traditions. Your final visit is to the large ruins of Ollantaytambo, one of the last stands of the Inca Pachacuiti against the Spanish conquistadors in 1536.

Moray Ruins

09:00 to 12:00
3 hours

Moray archaeological site is situated almost 40 kilometres from Cusco. It is a site in a beautiful setting and it is recommended that you take a trek with your guide behind the upper levels to get a panoramic view. It consists of four collocated concentric circular terraces.

The original purpose of Moray is uncertain, but many studies point to its function as a crop laboratory in Inca times. The layered terracing creates twenty different micro-climates of temperature from top to bottom. This terrace layout also allowed soil structures and drought resistance to be experimented upon.

The best yields would be targeted when growing seeds, checking their performance, then allocating them to a site with the most suitable aspect in Peru. This was crucially important as the lands of the Incan empire straddled many diverse regions from desert coast to high Andes Mountain and onward to the Amazon jungle. Potato varieties alone reach almost 4,000 and so Moray was considered a key determinant of food supply stability for the Inca. The provision of food in times of need was a key pacifier in the hierarchy of Inca societal rule.

Today your expert local guide will bring this wonderful destination to life, transporting you back in time to the Inca laboratory!

This is a great opportunity to learn first-hand of the culture of the people of the high Andes and witness how much of their practices have remained unchanged across eons of time. All in a friendly, fun and welcoming environment.

Ollantaytambo Ruins

14:00 to 18:00
4 hours

Ollantaytambo was originally a pre-Inca foundation, until the Inca ruler Pachakuti Yupanqui led forces in 1460 and subsequently subsumed as a part of the royal estates. The first Spanish conquistadors arrived in Peru in 1531 led by Francisco Pizarro. Their advance led them to assume control of much of Peru in the coming five years.

In this time, the Spaniards effectively held power and the Inca ruler Manco Inca accepted this until May 1536 whereon he embarked on an attack of the Spanish garrisons in Cusco. It was unsuccessful and he retreated to the town of Ollantaytambo.

In 1537, the Spanish led an invasion into the Sacred Valley and the Battle of Ollantaytambo ensued. Manco Inca managed to inflict one of the few defeats of the Spanish and they were forced to flee. Manco again tried to recapture Cusco but was unsuccessful. Following further forays by the Spanish into the Sacred Valley, the Inca decided to seek refuge toward the deeper jungle at Vilcabamba. This small enclave became the seat of Inca power until the killing of the final chief Túpac
Amaru in 1572.

Your expertly guided Sacred Valley tour will include all the pertinent sectors of the ruins. The prime destination is the Fortress at Cerro Bandolista. The setting is impressive with a storeyed construction of terraces carved into the hillside. Atop, these are crowned by the Wall of the Six Monoliths at the Temple of the Sun. Even this unfinished wall displays stunning Inca masonry craftsmanship in the pink rhyolite stone.

The guides take pride in not just directing you to the sectors of the complex but also to bring them to life. Educating you in the practices of our ancient fore- earers, their culture and mindset. Following on from the complex we will afford you an opportunity to visit a local Inca house, much unchanged in hundreds of years. They still live a simple existence with rudimentary cooking and living; your mind will be transported back in time. Ollantaytambo and its welcoming people by now will have become a part of your very own heart and soul.

Machu Picchu Tour

4 hours 30 minutes

Machu Picchu was revealed to the world, when the famous historian, explorer and archaeologist Hiram Bingham inadvertently came upon the site whilst on an expedition in 1911. Initially, the importance of the citadel was overlooked, and only when he returned over a year later the true significance was realized. Perched high up on the edge of a cliff set deep in the high jungle of Southern Peru, Machu Picchu fabled ‘The Lost City of the Incas’ is truly a first-class destination for many world travellers.

Invisible from the Urubamba Valley below, Machu Picchu lay dormant for more than 4 centuries as it sat secluded 2,800 metres (4,000 feet) above sea level. It was considered to have been abandoned by the Incas at the time of the Spanish invasion and became something of folklore and mystery until it was re-discovered hidden and preserved in the dense jungle of Vilcabamba.

Today’s tour includes an expansive 2.5-hour privately guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage. Your expert guide will allow you to see all the main sectors including the Caretakers Hut, Temple of the Sun, Royal Tomb, Three Windowed Temple, Intihuatana / Solar Clock and the Inca quarry.

Capturing Machu Picchu with your very own eyes is without exception an experience never to be forgotten.

This tour includes shuttle bus transfers.

Machu Picchu Mountain Trek

09:00 to 15:30
6 hours 30 minutes

Machu Picchu Mountain is the most spectacular yet one of the most overlooked optional treks available at Machu Picchu.

Located to the south-west of Machu Picchu citadel and towering 3,050 metres (10,007 feet) above sea level, the mountain trek offers unparalleled views of the famous Inca sanctuary and panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountain scenery. At its summit, Inca priests once performed rituals on special dates as well as liturgical greetings to the Salkantay Apu.

Unlike Huayna Picchu or Putucusi Mountain treks, the Machu Picchu trek is wide and well-marked. After the wardens hut, the trail follows a fairly even ascent of about 30-35 degrees in angle for about one hour. Gradually and steadily gaining altitude, the views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains become ever-more impressive. There are several views and rest points along the way.

As the trail gets closer to the base of Machu Picchu Mountain, the steps become steeper, narrower and more challenging. Winding on for another 30 minutes or so, the trail passes through a stone gateway, before following a narrow mountain ridge to the summit. A small round hut provides shelter and seating, whilst the viewpoint (a few more yards on) offers awe-inspiring views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and Putucusi Mountains.

The descent follows the same route but takes about 20-30 minutes less. The Machu Picchu trek is a moderate one and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
