Cross over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, enjoying views of the Hauraki Gulf and city skyline, and visit the Viaduct Harbour and the revitalised Silo Park waterfront precinct. See historic buildings around the University of Auckland before continuing over Grafton Bridge to the Auckland Domain.

The Domain is the city’s oldest park and, at 75 hectares, one of its largest. Developed around an extinct volcano, it features tropical gardens, duck ponds and public art, and is also home to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

After visiting the Domain, continue through the boutique shopping area of Parnell Village, and along the scenic waterfront route of Tamaki Drive. Just above Mission Bay is

Wine on Waiheke

Mount Victoria

Towering 196 metres over Wellington, Mount Victoria boats panoramic views over the city, the harbour and the ocean to the south. Known in Māori as Tangi Te Keo but also commonly referred to as Matairangi, Mount Victoria’s name is derived from a legend.

Legend has is that once the Wellington harbour was occupied by two large sea monsters, known as taniwha. One forced a passage from the land-locked harbour to the sea and the other tried to go another way but became stranded and died. It is believed that the mountain is named after the soul of Whataitai.

Mount Victoria is part of the Wellington Town Belt, an area of land set aside for public recreation and therefore a great place for walking, jogging and mountain biking. You can choose to drive up to the lookout or take the walkway.

From the top, stunning views will greet you and it’s not hard to while away the day by taking a picnic up, sitting on the hillside and relaxing whilst watching ferries and cruise ships sail into the harbour.

Today is a big day of travel as you head to the InterIslander Ferry to cross over to the South Island from Wellington. You’ll then head to the train station and travel by Coastal Pacific Train to Kaikoura. With the sea stretching to the horizon in the east and the Kaikoura mountains stretching to the sky in the west, the Coastal Pacific journey between Picton and Kaikoura is one of the most astonishingly beautiful in New Zealand.

Interislander Ferry – Wellington to Picton

The 92-kilometre journey between Wellington and Picton takes around three hours and has been described as ‘one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world’.

Leaving Wellington Harbour you pass many interesting points such as Pencarrow Head on top of which is New Zealand’s oldest lighthouse (1859). Red Rocks is home to a seal colony and Oterangi Bay is the site which recorded the country’s highest ever wind speed of 268 kph (167 mph).

From the Cook Strait, spectacular views of the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island can be enjoyed and dolphins and many sea birds are often seen. Around one hour of the cruise takes you through the Marlborough Sounds and this region of bush covered mountains, small islands, crystal clear waters and secluded bays offer remarkable photographic opportunities.

The final leg of your cruise travels through Queen Charlotte Sound before coming to an end in the picturesque town of Picton.

Head out to the ocean for a truly unique experience. Sightings may vary dependent on the time of year, however, giant sperm whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour encounters New Zealand fur seals, pods of dusky dolphins and the endangered wandering albatross.

Depending on the season you may also see migrating humpback whales, pilot whales, blue whales and southern right whales. Kaikoura often hosts Orca – and is home to the world’s smallest and rarest – the Hector’s. Kaikoura also attracts the largest concentration and variety of seabirds on mainland New Zealand including 13 species of albatross, 14 varieties of petrels and seven types of shearwater.
