Avignon’s Papal Palace

The largest in Europe, the Papal Palace is the equivalent of 4 Gothic cathedral’s put together.

Having begun in the 12th century, the Gothic palace took just less than 20 years to build under the guidance of two Popes, Benedict XII and Clement VI. The palace can be separated into two buildings that are in two different styles, Palais Vieux (Benedict XII) and Palais Neuf (Clement VI). Pope Clement VI was noted for his extravagance, which can be seen in this part of the palace.

As the official seat of Western Christianity in the 14th century, the medieval building became one of the most important Gothic buildings in the continent; 6 conclaves were held in its grounds.

Sat on a rocky hill in Avignon, looking onto the River Rhone, the palace was built on the grounds of an Episcopal church. The papal returned to Rome in the 15th century, which resulted in the Papal Schism, where two people said they were Pope at the same time. This resulted in the antipope taking over the palace before it was besieged and returned to the papal.

Over the years proceeding, through the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars, the palace was destroyed and damaged beyond repair. It has been in a constant state of restoration since it was to become a national museum in 1906.

Today, visitors can view 20 of the rooms including an art exhibit in the Great Chapel.

Arles Amphitheatre

Sitting on the narrowest part of France, just a short distance from both Spain and Italy, Arles was perfectly situated to be part of the Roman Empire.

The two-tiered amphitheatre looks out across the city, estimated to host 20,000 people in 90 AD, it was the beating heart of the city during its prime. With 120 arches and an oval shape, it’s clear from its features that the design was taken from the Colosseum in Rome. It hosted gladiators and games for 4 centuries before the fall of the Roman Empire.

Post-Roman era, the amphitheatre as such a large structure, was transformed into a fortress town with over 200 houses inside centred by a square and churches that occupied the entertainment arena. The fortress was protected by towers that overlooked each cardinal direction.

In an effort to restore the amphitheatre to its original purpose, the site was nationalised and deconstruction began in the early 19th century. A bull race had taken place in the newly restored arena by 1826 to celebrated the success of the Invasion of Algiers.

The park is an 85,000-hectare modern day example of the fight between man and nature. During the 18th-century sea walls were built and the river banks improved to prevent flooding of the arable land.

Sitting at the mouth of the River Rhone, you’ll find the vast, wide expanse known as Camargue National Park, a UNESCO- recognised designated biosphere reserve founded in 1970. The landscape is an amalgamation of rice fields, salt marshes, marshes, lakes, reed marshes with pink flamingos, and moors where wild white horses and bulls can be seen grazing.

The park is also home to incredible plant and bird life which usually gathers around the lakes and makes for a bird watchers paradise.

As you walk inside, you’ll immediately notice three naves, all of which are of different styles; Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque. Conversely, the cloister was built at the end of the 11th century neighboured by pillars that bring us back to unite nature.

Each style appears to respect the other while defining their difference, a simplistic approach that offers great appreciation to the building as a religious place is evident; the cathedral is a breath of fresh air with an aura of tranquillity.

Enigmatic of the celebrity scene, when you think you SaintTropez, the image of clear blue skies, pastel houses and yachting comes to your mind almost instantly.

Saint-Tropez is the epitome of French Riveria sophistication; once a small fishing village undiscovered to internationals, now a trip to the south of France is not complete without strolling down the marina.

From pristine white beaches and boutique shops and cafes to elite clubs and star-studded yacht parties; the cobbled lanes of Saint-Tropez will make you fall in love with the French Riveria.

Despite its fame and fortune, the town retains its oldfashioned charm, with buildings that only rise to two or three storeys, the boutique shops and cafes occupy quaint cottages with shutters painted in pastels. Monaco, commonly known as The Rock due to its position on the peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea, was originally a Greek colony and only became known as Monaco during the Middle Ages. Monaco is one of the world’s most densely populated urban centre but the city itself maintains a medieval charm boasting pedestrianised streets and large squares.

The main sites to see in Monaco include the Prince’s Palace which is the official residence of Albert II, Prince of Monaco, Saint Nicholas Cathedral, the Oceanographic Museum, Fort Antoine Theatre, and Chapelle de la Misericorde which is one of the oldest buildings in the principality of Monaco.
