Then you head out to Bouza winery sitting on the outskirts of the city to do your first wine tasting and have lunch in this tranquil setting. You’ll meet your guide, leave your hotel and start your Montevideo city tour. In the historical centre, you’ll appreciate the beautiful colonial architecture that surrounds the Plaza de Constitución like the Cathedral, City Hall, and the Solís Theatre.

At the Independence Square, you’ll see a monument honouring José Gervasio Artigas, a national hero. You’ll continue your tour to the Mercado del Puerto, an old market hall filled with street musicians and local artists. Near the port market, at the Mercado de los Artesanos, you will have the possibility to purchase handicraft works of local artists made of typical materials such as leather or wool from Uruguay.

Afterwards, you’ll drive along the lively 18 de Julio street until you reach the Legislative Palace, an impressive building that was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Then, you’ll stop and visit Mercado Agricola, a market that was used for selling cattle. At the recently renovated market, you can discover Uruguay’s culinary customs and stroll along the fruits and vegetables stands or try fresh pastries like bizcochos or torta frita.

You’ll then continue your drive around town and pass by the Batlle and Ordoñez Park, the Obelisk, and the Centenario Soccer Stadium that was built for the first World Cup in 1930. You’ll end your tour at the Plaza Virgilio and in the residential area of Carrasco. Appreciate and photograph the stunning views of the city before driving along the coast and its beaches back to your hotel.

The Bouza Boutique Winery is located at the source of the Melilla Stream, at only 15 kilometres from Montevideo.

The winery is part of a harmonious milieu, surrounded by vines and native woods. The vineyard is composed of 10 hectares of Tannat, Merlot and Chardonnay plants, of ages ranging between 20 and 40 years. Also, 13 hectares with new plantations of Tannat, Merlot, Tempranillo and Albariño, selecting high quality and low productivity clones.

Bouza Winery was built using the basic structure of an old winery functioning in the area since 1942. It was restored maintaining the original idea. Wine varieties: Albariño (white wine), Chardonnay, Merlot, Tannat-Merlot, and more.

The tour starts with a visit to the vineyards and orientation on the process, observing the nature with a wide diversification of fauna and flora, a collection of antique cars like a Ford T 1926. Ford A, Citroen 1950, 1980, Alfa Romeo Spider 1960, or 1926 train wagons among others. Afterwards, you’ll attend a
wine tasting of the different varieties will take place followed by lunch.

You’ll visit Almacen de la Capilla, an old country grocery store in the small village of Colonia Estrella, surrounded by quiet and natural countryside. Almacen de la Capilla was founded by Antonio Cordano at the beginning of 1900 to provide the neighbourhood with goods and to be a meeting place for friends. Its name ‘Almacen de la Capilla’ refers to ‘Capilla San Roque’, a small chapel near the grocery store and also an attraction due to its history.

The Almacen belongs to the organic winery called “Bodega Cordano” founded by Italian immigrants, the Cordano family, in 1855. Cordano produces classical wines without any kind of state of the art machinery. All done manually like in those times.

Today you’ll drive from Punta del Este to the bus terminal of Cabo Polonio where you’ll board a special vehicle to take you through the dunes to the village of Cabo Polonio. Cabo Polonio is a National Park near Valizas, one of the seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast of Rocha. It is best known for its large sea lion colony, which can be seen from the coast and the lighthouse. The small village is surrounded by shifting dunes. After discovering Cabo Polonio, you’ll head back to Punta del Este.

The Cabo Polonio National Park is an area of scenic beauty that preserves the Uruguayan Atlantic coast. This coastal area is characterised by diverse beauty, including sandy beaches, rocky areas, dunes, coastal forests, small swamps, oceanic environments and islands.

Many of these ecosystems are a priority for the SNAP (National System of National Parks and Protected Areas) due to their limited distribution in Uruguay territory. The most outstanding component is the dune system of Cabo Polonio, which is the largest remnant of a strip of sand that once stretched along the entire coast. It is one of the few areas with shifting dunes in the region, reaching a height of over 20 metres.

The Cabo Polonio National Park is home to several protected species, including endangered or threatened species (such as Darwin’s toad), plant and animal species of limited distribution (such as the “Banana do mato”, the four-eyed frog and the pond turtle) and migratory species of regional of global importance such as terns, southern right whales and green turtles.

Almost half of the two sea lion species are found on the islands near Cabo Polonio, where their rutting and breeding grounds are located. The rocky area of Cabo Polonio is home to the only continental settlement of fur seals in the country. It offers a unique opportunity to observe these animals at close range.

From an archaeological point of view, Cabo Polonio and its surroundings were occupied by prehistoric societies some 11,000 years ago until European’ colonisation. The national park is the area where the prehistoric occupation of the entire coastal area is best expressed.

From a historical point of view, the Cerro de la Buena Vista (the highest point in the area) served as a border between the Spanish and Portuguese empires between 1750 and 1777, according to the Treaty of Madrid.

The lagoon of Rocha, declared a nature reserve by UNESCO, is located on the way north directly on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. More than 200 species of birds can be found here, including the endangered Chilean flamingos.

The innumerable shells and molluscs also supply the giant otters, which you can observe with a little luck. The large and small South American rodents, Carpinchos and Tucu-tucu collarado are also at home here. From the lagoon, there are kilometres of lonely sandy beaches up to the lighthouse of La Paloma, the next coastal town of Rocha.

Casapueblo was created by the well-known abstract artist, Carlos Páez Vilaró who built this as has workshop and summer home. Since the artist’s passing the house has become a retrospective of his life work with the additions of a hotel and cafeteria.

It all started with a small wooden hut made from found wood, this was Vilaró’s first atelier. Then, inspired by the Greek island of Santorini and a hornero bird’s nest, the plan to create Casapueblo was born. Spread out over thirteen floors covering the hillside, Casapueblo took 36 years to complete.

Today, the museum is attached to a 20-room hotel. The museum itself is divided into four rooms, each named after Vilaró’s greatest inspirations. There are also many terraces where you can enjoy unrivalled sunset views.

This morning, you’ll head out on a privately guided tour to the Maras Salt Pans. A great photo opportunity where salt production has changed little over generations in a spectacular landscape. You’ll then visit the mysterious ruins at Moray, once used as an Inca crop laboratory. Your final visit is to the large ruins of Ollantaytambo, one of the last stands of the Inca Pachacuiti against the Spanish conquistadors in 1536.

Hidden in the Urubamba Valley, Maras Salt Mines are a littleknown site left by the Incas, an impeccably well-preserved example of agricultural development in the region.

Amazingly still in use, the salt mines are just 100 metres from Maras, with stunning views out into the valley, the myriad of salt-crusted pools are evaporation ponds. The wind carries the sound of water trickling from terrace to terrace. From a distance, the terraces form an otherworldly site, with the salt appearing like dusted icing in contrast to the deep red of the hillside.

Like most Inca cities, Moray is perched 3,500 metres above sea level on a high plateau. However, Moray differs from other Inca ruins in that it mostly consists of several traditional terraced circular depressions measuring up to 30 metres deep in places and up to 220 metres wide.

These terraces were used as plant nurseries and as each level of the terrace had its own microclimate, it allowed seeds to develop in harsh, high altitude conditions. As with most Inca sites, Moray also had a complex water irrigation system.

Although we presume they were used for agriculture, the Moray ruins still hold a large mystery of why these fringedstone terraces were built. Compared to many other Inca sites, Moray is simple which suggests it may have been an experiment by the Incan people.

Grouped together in Peru’s lush Cuzco region, the ringed Incan ruins known as Moray have long been a mystery, but it is looking more and more likely that the nested stone rings may have been part of a large-scale agricultural experiment to see how crops would grow in other regions across the Inca empire.

Located at the far end of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, this precious gem of an archaeological site is known to few tourists. Located at 2,792 metres above sea level, Ollantaytambo is a great alternative to Machu Picchu and one of the most common starting points for the famous Inca Trail.

This ancient Inca fortress was built during the Inca Empire in the 15th century and served as the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. During the Spanish conquest of Peru, Ollantaytambo was the famed stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance, and is known as one of the few places that Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle.

The approach to Ollantaytambo is guarded by huge, steep terraces. These terraces played a part in the battle to overcome the Spanish conquistadors as they were showered with arrows from the heights above and were unable to climb the terraces. Ollantaytambo is the second most well-preserved archaeological site in the whole of Peru.

This morning, you’ll head off on a magnificent trek in the footsteps of the Inca. Wise and free, these giant tortoises wander this reserve at their own pace, slowly grazing throughout the day, jutting their surprisingly long necks to reach the grass below them. The size of these prehistoric creatures is astounding! You’ll watch the giant tortoises go about their daily activities from a distance.

As you watch the peaceful old animals perusing, keep an eye out for Darwin’s finches or the short-eared owls, and, if you are lucky, paint-billed crakes hiding in the grass.

Today, you’ll spend the day exploring Santa Cruz Island. First, you’ll visit Dragon Hill, one of the newest places to visit in the Galapagos Islands. Here, walking trails will lead you along the beach and to the lagoon lookout where you can spot bright flamingoes, land iguanas and more. You’ll then head to Las Bachas, a swimming beach in the north of the island where you can see the remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier.

Situated on Santa Cruz Island, Dragon Hill is one of the newest visitor sites accessible to tourists in the Galapagos Islands. One of the lengthier Galapagos walking trails will lead visitors along a beach and up a trail to the lagoon lookout where bright flamingos, pintail ducks, and land iguanas can be spotted.

Located on the north shore of Santa Cruz, Las Bachas is a swimming beach. One of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier, can be seen here. You may see flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles also nest off the beach.

Today, you’ll cruise to Floreana Island to explore two interesting sights: Post Office Bay and Cormorant Point. The island is known for its pristine beaches; renowned diving spots, such as the Devil’s Crown; the pink flamingoes and green turtles that nest on Cormorant Point between December and May and the Post Office Bay which offers you the chance to send a postcard home via the 200-year-old post barrel which dates back to 18th-century whaler times.

Officially Santa Maria Island, named after one of Christopher Columbus’ caravels, Floreana Island was later named as such after President Juan José Flores, the president who reclaimed it for Ecuador.

The island is known for its pristine beaches; renowned diving spots, such as the Devil’s Crown; the pink flamingoes and green turtles that nest on Punta Cormorant between December and May and the Post Office Bay which offers you the chance to send a postcard home via the 200-year-old post barrel which dates back to 18th-century whaler times.

Another interesting place to visit on the island is Cormorant Point which plays host to a large flamingo lagoon and unique beaches such as the ‘Green Beach’ and ‘Four Sand Beach’.

Located in the southeast of the archipelago, Espanola Island is considered one of the oldest islands dating back four million years. The island is renowned for the congregation of the waved albatrosses, blue-footed boobies and Galapagos sea lions. There are many highlights of this island, two of which you’ll visit today: Suarez Point and Gardner Bay.

Located in the southeast of the archipelago, Espanola Island like Santa Fe Island is considered one of the oldest islands dating back four million years. The island is renowned for the congregation of the waved albatrosses; during the breeding season, almost the entire world population inhabits Espanola Island.

On Espanola Island, you can also observe the mating dances of blue-footed boobies. One of the driest islands, Espanola is a rocky, barren and flat land scarce with vegetation. However, the large bays do attract good numbers of Galapagos sea lions.

As well as the albatrosses, boobies and sea lions, Espanola Island also has a few endemic species including the Española mockingbird, which has a longer and more curved beak than the other islands, and the Española lava lizard.

Highlights of Espanola Island include Gardner Bay (Bahia Gardner), a lovely stretch of white sand beach where you can spot sea lions and go snorkelling, and Suarez Point (Punta Suarez), where you can watch the massive waved albatross use the cliff as a runway before propelling themselves off into the sky to begin flying.

This morning, head into Montevideo for a city tour. The main points of interest will be in the historic city centre where you will visit the Plaza de Constitucion with the cathedral and the colonial town hall. Then you will proceed to the Congress Building, Mercado Agricola Montevideo, passing by the Obelisk to Batlle and Ordoñez Park and the Centenario Soccer Stadium where the very first World Cup final was played. Afterwards, visit Pocitos Beach and take a stroll along to Ramirez Beach.

In the morning you’re taken on a comprehensive tour around the city. Your first stop will be the historic centre. You will walk through the old part of the city and to the Constitution Square with the cathedral and colonial town hall.

From here, you walk to the Solis Theatre where Carlos Gardel used to tango in the past. Afterwards, you will head to independence Square where you will see the monument dedicated to the national hero, José Gervasio Artigas and his mausoleum.

Continue to the Uruguayan Congress Building where you’ll tour inside: this huge building is the pride of Uruguay. It was constructed between 1908 and 1925 with local marble consisting of 52 colours and 12 types of wood.

Drive to the recently opened Mercado Agricola Montevideo. The renovated Central Farmers Market is the first retail mall specialising in the sale of non-perishable food and fresh local produce. Passing by the Obelisk, you will continue to Batlle & Ordoñez Park and visit the Centenario Soccer Stadium where
the very first World Cup final was played –and won by Uruguay- in 1930. Soccer and especially the local soccer league is an important part of the Uruguayan culture and your guide will tell you about the impressive history of the Uruguayan soccer team that won the World Cup twice.

Afterwards, you will drive to Pocitos Beach where you will be able to take a stroll along the promenade. Then you will continue along the Rambla to Ramirez Beach and the Parque Rodó. There you will have some time to wander around before it’s time to “do as the locals do”: try some mate and bizcochos on the Rambla – or if it’s too hot, in the shade of the trees of Parque Rodó.

Your last stop will be the famous Mercado del Puerto, the port market of Montevideo where you may want to have lunch with a glass of the famous “medio-medio”, a mix of white wine and sparkling wine, to raise your glass to a fabulous time in Uruguay.

Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo sits in a bay by the same name and is a very relaxed city for a capital city. Much to the relief of those that visit, Uruguay has somehow remained off the beaten track in South America meaning all of its jewels remain unscathed.

Montevideo’s roads are well-paved, charming and quiet. The boulevards leading to the historic city centre are lined with palm trees and historic buildings, making it look like a scene from Europe. The city itself revolves around the main square, Plaza de la Independencia, which was once home to a Spanish citadel.

From the plaza, you can find your way to the old town with its art deco buildings, colonial houses and classic landmarks like Palacio Salvo and the Solís Theatre.

Today, you’ll drive towards Piriapolis, a coastal city located 19 miles from Punta del Este. The city, built during the time of the “belle époque”, has the look of Europe’s Côte d’Azur. You’ll then continue to Punta del Este. The next stops will be at Portezuelo and Punta Ballena for sweeping views up and down the coast). You’ll visit the Museum Casa Pueblo, home and atelier of the famous Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. You’ll return to Montevideo late afternoon.

Today, you’ll drive towards Piriapolis, a coastal city located 19 miles from Punta del Este. The city, built during the time of the “belle époque”, has the look of Europe’s Côte d’Azur. It was the first swimming-resort in Uruguay.

You will visit the “Argentino Hotel” which was built in 1930 and represents the spirit of that glorious era. It was at that time the most luxurious hotel in South America. When you step into the lobby it is like entering a time machine. Everything is still kept as at that time, the furniture and the gorgeous art nouveau details.

You’ll continue to Punta del Este. The next stops will be at Portezuelo and Punta Ballena for sweeping views up and down the coast (great spots for photographers). You’ll visit the Museum Casa Pueblo, home and atelier of the famous Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. The dazzling white
complex, resembling Spanish-Moroccan architecture, is situated on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean.

Vilaró built it in 1958 with his own hands, using only traditional tools. Narrow steps lead to a maze of rooms scattered on different levels and filled with the artist’s works. You’ll cntinue to see the Residential areas of Punta del Este with its elegant homes and most sophisticated architecture such as San Rafael, Cantegril, Parque Golf and Beverly Hills.

Along the wide variety of fine sandy beaches such as Playa Brava, San Rafael, El Emir, to the downtown area, main Avenue (Avenida Gorlero) and the port.

Before Punta del Este made a name for itself as a moonlit seaside resort, Piriápolis was already known as one of the most beautiful holiday destinations on the coast.

Drive to the Estancia Finca Piedra. You will be guided through the Estancia, once one of Uruguay’s top meat producers and go for a horse or carriage ride in the surrounding area. Perhaps, you can learn about mate culture; a social tradition. Afterwards, enjoy a barbecue lunch and visit the animal reserve where local animals like Ñandus, Carpinchos live. Later a “merienda” will be served – comparable to an afternoon coffee with cakes and dulce de leche before you drive to Colonia del Sacramento.

Take a guided tour through the historic Estancia, which once was one of Uruguay’s most important meat producers.

Afterwards, you can either go for a horse ride or a carriage ride through the immediate surroundings of the Estancia.

You can’t visit Rio without a visit to Christ the Redeemer, one of Brazil’s most renowned tourist attractions. The imposing monument towers over the city from 700 metres high on the summit of the Corcovado mountain and is truly a sight to behold.

Another highlight of the city is the Escadaria Selaron steps that are decorated with beautiful rainbow mosaics handmade by Jorge Selaron, who built this landmark to display his love for Brazil. Starting in the bohemian neighbourhood of Lapa, the steps lead up all the way to Santa Teresa.

Head to Cosme Velho Station to board a cog-train for the ride through Tijuca Forest up Corcovado Mountain at 2,454 feet. At the top of Corcovado is the lookout point where Christ the Redeemer stands. After appreciating the views below, pass by Rio’s famous beaches to reach Sugar Loaf Mountain and ascend by cable car. Then head to the downtown area, where you’ll pass Candelaria Church, Saint Sebastian Cathedral, the Fine Arts Museum, and finish at the Sambadrome, the site of the Carnival parade.

Head to Cosme Velho Station to board a cog-train for the ride through Tijuca Forest up Corcovado Mountain sitting at 2,454 feet. The train ride takes 20 minutes and is a wonderful opportunity to see the forest’s lush tropical vegetation and the scenic landscapes of the beaches and city. Disembark at the top of Corcovado and walk up the steps that lead to the top lookout where the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer stands.

The tour proceeds to pass by Rio’s world-famous beaches until you reach Urca District to board a cable car for a two-staged ascent up Sugar Loaf Mountain at 1,280 feet high. After you come down you’ll head to Guanabara Bay and Flamengo Park to visit the downtown area. Pass by the financial and business centre and other attractions such as the Candelaria Church, Saint Sebastian Cathedral, Lapa Arches, Municipal Theatre, National Library, Fine Arts Museum, and by the Sambadrome, the site of Rio’s famous Carnival parade.

Standing tall over Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer is an icon of the city, if not of the country. Standing at the summit of 704-metre-high Mount Corcovado, this colossal statue of Jesus Christ stands at 30 metres tall with arms outstretched measuring 28 metres across on an 8-metre-high stone pedestal. This statue is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world.

Completed in 1931, the statue was proposed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro in 1921. A year later, the first stone was laid. The statue is made of reinforced concrete and covered in a mosaic of thousands upon thousands of triangular soapstone tiles. To reach the statue, you can take escalators, the cog train or the panoramic elevators that were added in 2002.

Sugarloaf Mountain, known locally as Pao de Acucar, is one of the most iconic landmarks of Rio de Janeiro. Stretching up to a massive 396 metres, the observation platform at the top boasts wonderful views over the city, its modern skyscrapers, its harbour, its beaches and of course, the Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance.

To reach the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, you can either opt to take the cable car up both hills or you can hike up to the top of the first then take the cable car to the second. Both hills feature a number of restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops as well as forest walks and an interactive museum.
