Overlooking the city, the Acropolis was first known as Cecropia, in acknowledgement to the first legendary king of Athens, Cecrops. The Citadel was first constructed in the 5th century BC by Pericles who was a general during the Golden Age of Athens.

It was under his jurisdiction that the most famous remains, such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike were created. Although Pericles had a great influence on the architecture of the city, the area was inhabited for at least 2 centuries previously, there is little evidence of what happened during these times.

Moving into the Hellenistic and Roman periods, many of the buildings were restored having been damaged due to age or war. Several monuments dedicated to kings of the era were added to the citadel. Further into the Julio-Claudian era, the last significant buildings were erected, including the Temple of
Rome and Augustus and the amphitheatre built by aristocrat Atticus Herodes.

In the years that followed, the Acropolis was the bustling centre of Athens, serving many purposes; the Parthenon alone was used as a church, a headquarters for the army and a harem. The architecture of Byzantine, Ottoman and Frankish influence made its way into the city, consequentially removed when Greece declared independence in the 19th century.

Today, few of the buildings remain, including the Theatre of Dionysus, Atticus Herodes’ amphitheatre and the Erechtheum Temple, dedicated to Athena and Poseidon.

Immediately after the founding of the Greek State, discussions of an Acropolis Museum on the hill of the Acropolis began. In 1863, it was decided that the museum would be to the southeast of the Parthenon and construction began.

By the 1970s, the museum could not cope with the large numbers coming through its doors and so a large one building was built. Covering 25,000 square meters, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, it is ten times the size of the old museum.

The first gallery, the Slopes of the Acropolis, houses finds from the sanctuaries, as well as objects that Athenians used in everyday life from all historical periods. The Archaic Acropolis Gallery allows you to see three-dimensional exhibits. With the benefit of the changing natural light, you can discover the delicate surfaces of the sculptures.

In the centre of the Parthenon Gallery, you can watch a video presentation about the Parthenon. In the same area, there are ancient marble inscriptions recording detailed cost records of its construction and the statue of Athena Parthenos.

Start your walk on Andrianou Street, the most distinctive street of the Plaka neighbourhood, filled with sophisticated shops and souvenirs.

Then, go to the imposing Roman Agora and the Tower of the Winds, and a little further down, you will have the chance to admire the Library of Hadrian and the vivid life of Monastiraki Square, a place full of people and colours.

After having crossed this fascinating commercial triangle, you will arrive at Panepistimiou Street, where you will be impressed by a trilogy of Neo-Classical buildings, such as the National Library, the Academy, and the University of Athens. As you walk further down, you will reach Syntagma Square, the most famous square of the city. There, you will take some time to watch the valiant Evzones in front of the building of the Greek Parliament.

Having left Syntagma Square behind you, you will stroll through the lush green oasis of the National Gardens. While this will be an ideal place to relax away from the city noise, your refreshing walk will lead you to the extraordinary Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games took place.

You will continue for a little while to reach the impressive NeoClassical building of Zappeion Hall before being amazed by the size of the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Hadrian Arch. Your walk will come to an end in front of the Lycicrates monument in Plaka, within close proximity to the Acropolis Metro Station.

The Panathenaic Stadium is a classical cultural and touristic monument of Greece and one of the most significant monuments not only for Athens but for the whole of Greece. It is one of the city’s most popular touristic attractions and one of Athens’ landmarks.

Its rich history is directly connected to the Modern Olympic Games as from their revival in 1896 until the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. It is also the place from where the Olympic flame sets up its journey to the cities of the Olympic Games, both Winter, Summer and Youth.

The stadium is located on the site of an ancient stadium and for many centuries hosted games in which nude male athletes competed in track events – athletics championships, as we would call them today. The games, which since antiquity had been held in an area far from the city, were included in the programme of the Panathenaia festival celebrations in 566/565 BC.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is located within walking distance from the centre of Athens and in close proximity to some of the other historic monuments such as the Acropolis and Hadrian’s Arc. The temple was dedicated to Zeus, who was the king of the Olympian gods.

Standing at around 17 metres high, the structure was considered to be one of the largest temples in the ancient world with a total of 104 columns, however, only 15 have survived since construction was completed in 132 AC, under the Roman Emperor Hadrian.

A century after its completion, the temple was ravaged during a barbarian invasion in the 3rd century AD, it fell into disuse, and from the archaeological findings of today, it is likely that it was never repaired, eventually being reduced to ruins.

Built on the highest peak of the island, the Monastery of the Prophet Elias offers 360-degree views of the whole island. The monastery is the oldest on the island, surrounded by rugged landscapes and vineyards; it stands out from its surroundings with its fortress-like style.

You have the day free, so why not consider hiking the very popular Caldera Trail between Fira to Oia? The hike is around 10.5 kilometres or 6.5 miles and is a relatively easy climb in both directions.

Found just off the shores of Mykonos, Delos is largely regarded as the most sacred site in all of Greece. Delos was considered a holy site 1000 years before Leto decided the island would be the birthplace of twin gods Artemis and Apollo, as told in Olympic Greek Mythology.

In finding the presence of both Dionysus and Leto, the island established great national significance during the ancient period, particularly for the Ionians. In spite of this, in-depth excavations did not take place on the island until the mid-19th century.

The island was purified to be deemed fit for the gods at the time, there was to be no death or birth in order to preserve its sanctity. Once the Romans came into power, this changed drastically.

The island became a trading port, where Romans would come to meet to purchase slaves, it later became a hub of trading activity in the region, which assisted in its development. However, this development came to a drastic halt during the Mithridatic War of 88 BC.

As a consequence of its perverse history paired with a lack of natural resources, the island became uninhabited for some time. The island is an abandoned labyrinth of ancient temples, marketplaces, sacred houses and sculptures, preserved wonderfully.

The Cretan Renaissance is found in a Venetian manor house, characterised by the Ephorate of Byzantium Antiquities and a historical monument to be preserved. Its construction is estimated somewhere within the period of Venetian domination upon Crete. The architectural approach and settlement of the building follow the stylistic principles of that historical era.

History has proven interaction between the two civilisations (Greek-Byzantine and Western-Roman) at that period of time, creating a conjunction that gave birth to the “Cretan Renaissance”; a great era for Crete where literature and visual arts came in bloom.

The building was initially a residence for a family of Venetian musicians and later operated as a station of general administration. Just before the end of the Venetian dominion, the building became the residence of a Cretan Court Lord.. Overlooking the city, the Acropolis was first known as Cecropia, in acknowledgement to the first legendary king of Athens, Cecrops. The Citadel was first constructed in the 5th century BC by Pericles who was a general during the Golden Age of Athens.

It was under his jurisdiction that the most famous remains, such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike were created. Although Pericles had a great influence on the architecture of the city, the area was inhabited for at least 2 centuries previously, there is little evidence of what happened during these times.

Moving into the Hellenistic and Roman periods, many of the buildings were restored having been damaged due to age or war. Several monuments dedicated to kings of the era were added to the citadel. Further into the Julio-Claudian era, the last significant buildings were erected, including the Temple of Rome and Augustus and the amphitheatre built by aristocrat Atticus Herodes.

In the years that followed, the Acropolis was the bustling centre of Athens, serving many purposes; the Parthenon alone was used as a church, a headquarters for the army and a harem. The architecture of Byzantine, Ottoman and Frankish influence made its way into the city, consequentially removed when Greece declared independence in the 19th century.

Today, few of the buildings remain, including the Theatre of Dionysus, Atticus Herodes’ amphitheatre and the Erechtheum Temple, dedicated to Athena and Poseidon.

Immediately after the founding of the Greek State, discussions of an Acropolis Museum on the hill of the Acropolis began. In 1863, it was decided that the museum would be to the southeast of the Parthenon and construction began.

By the 1970s, the museum could not cope with the large numbers coming through its doors and so a large one building was built. Covering 25,000 square meters, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, it is ten times the size of the old museum.

The first gallery, the Slopes of the Acropolis, houses finds from the sanctuaries, as well as objects that Athenians used in everyday life from all historical periods. The Archaic Acropolis Gallery allows you to see three-dimensional exhibits. With the benefit of the changing natural light, you can discover the delicate surfaces of the sculptures.

In the centre of the Parthenon Gallery, you can watch a video presentation about the Parthenon. In the same area, there are ancient marble inscriptions recording detailed cost records of its construction and the statue of Athena Parthenos.

Today will be a full day of exploring the canals of Venice and its main attractions like Rialto, St. Mark’s Square, the Grand Canal and Doge’s Palace, a grand 15th-century building which has been built and rebuilt many times. In the afternoon, it is also possible to visit the nearby islands of Murano and Burano, two just of Venice’s 100 islands but arguably the most famous, known for their glass making and lace making traditions.

Commonly known as Saint Mark’s Square, Piazza San Marco is one of Venice’s most important and largest landmarks. The large, open space is one of very few in this largely waterbound city so has been a popular meeting point for travellers and locals alike for many years.

Home to the grand Saint Mark’s Basilica and the towering and iconic bell tower, the square offers a true architectural spectacle.

Constructed during the 9th century to accompany the impressive basilica which now sits at the east end of the square and the Doge’s Palace, the square was then enlarged in the 12th century. Once paved with bricks depicting a beautiful herringbone pattern, the square was repaved with natural stone in the early 1700s.

The oldest of four bridges that straddle the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge connects the sestieri of San Marco and San Polo. Despite being overshadowed at times by Venice’s more sought-after attractions, Rialto Bridge remains the heart of Venice for many.

The current bridge you see was built in just three years between 1588 and 1591. The original bridge was built in the 12th century as a boat bridge then followed by three wooden bridges before finally being replaced with the structure you see today.

Up until 1854, Rialto Bridge was the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot.

The history of the Doge’s Palace is a turbulent one. Having been rebuilt several times due to the palace being destroyed in what seemed to be centurial fires.

The oldest part of the building is the courtyard and staircase which looks onto St Mark’s Basilica, adjacent to the palace. Built in the 15th century, it descends down to the piazza arched by great sculptures of Neptune and Mars, forming the Giant’s Staircase.

With much reconstruction, the design of the palace was set to switch from the Byzantine-Venetian Gothic style to a more contemporary Renaissance style. This can be seen in some parts of the building, however, after a third fire in the 16th century, this decision was revoked.

After this, a neo-classical element was added to the building when it was linked to the neighbouring prison with the Bridge of Sighs: a limestone bridge that was used to take prisoners to the interrogation room.

The works that were created for the palace during the 14th and 15th century were some of the most spectacular examples of Venetian sculpture, which over the years, fell into disrepair with the buildings constant fires and structure problems. Some of these were saved and can now be seen in the Museo dell’Opera alongside parts of the facade and columns that decorated the palace.

This charming area is particularly famous for its glass, which has been infamous in the area for centuries after glassmakers were ordered out of the heart of Venice in fear that they would set fire to the wooden architecture.

Today, the majority of Murano’s population are still glassblowers and makers, journeying through this area by water taxi, you can peak into the workshops to see this fascinating process that is dying around the world, yet still maintains highly regarded in tradition around this area.

A charming island in the Venetian Lagoon, Burano is a colourful myriad of pastel houses that became a thriving island after its discovery, which was supposedly in the 6th century.

Despite its establishment as an island, Burano had little privileges that other settlements enjoyed until the island was regarded as an important addition to the creative community. The women of the island started producing the most beautiful lace products in the 16th century, it soon gained popularity, and was renowned across the country. Eventually, the lace was exported across Europe.

With its popularity, a lacemaking school was opened on the island, however, today, few know how to make lace by hand, as it is an expensive and time consuming practice that is not profitable.

Journeying around the island, you’ll see traces of the former trade, alongside the more modernised, machine sewn lace in practice.

A 19th-century castle situated on the Gulf of Trieste overlooking the sea, Castello di Miramare as its locally known was built from 1856 to 1860 for an Austrian Archduke and his wife. With Trieste to one side, the snow-capped Dolomites as a backdrop to the north and its position metres above the Mediterranean sea, Miramare Castle is one of the finest castles on the continent.

The castle was built in a brilliant mix of Gothic, Medieval and Renaissance styles which reflected the archduke’s eclectic taste at the time, a style popular amongst Habsburg nobility. Unfortunately, the castle was residence to the couple only for a short time and in the decades that followed, the castle became a holiday home for members of the Habsburg family.

Following the first world war, the castle was opened to the public before serving as a residence to several forces during the second world war before finally being returned to the Italians. this short but turbulent history and its unique architectural heritage are two of the elements that make this castle so interesting.

Parts of this grand complex have been destroyed either by warfare or natural disasters and hence have been rebuilt and renovated many times. The monastery was originally built in 1630 in a Romanesque style and the library within it contains over 20,000 books, many centuries old and very valuable. The pharmacy back to 1317 and is the 3rd oldest fully functioning pharmacy in the entire world.

The seat of the Diocese of Dubrovnik, part of the Roman Catholic Church. Having first been erected in 990, the building was not renovated to reach a highly revered position of the archdiocese until the 12th century. In the 18th century, it was demoted to the diocese by the Pope.

The building was rebuilt almost every century until the 12thcentury basilica that was commissioned by King Richard the I as a votive for having been saved from shipwreck on his return from the Kings Crusade.

It was not until the 17th century that this was destroyed in an earthquake that struck the city. Andrea Bufalini among other architects and a friar were commissioned by the Senate of Dubrovnik to create a Baroque masterpiece. The cathedral took 3 decades to create the Roman-Baroque cathedral you see today.

A small island in the Adriatic Sea, Lokrum is known as the Island of Kings. The island was first mentioned in 1023 for the Benedictine abbey and neighbouring monastery.

Legend has it, Richard the I was in a shipwreck and cast ashore on Lokrum after returning from the Third Crusade. Having been saved, the King was compelled to build a church on the island in thanks for the locals’ bravery.

Built for the Roman Emperor of the same name between 284-305, the palace occupies half the Old Town of Split, most of which was used as a military garrison. It was referred to as a palace as Diocletian intended to retire here, built on the outskirts of the former Dalmatian capital of Salona, now Solin.

When the Roman Empire was defeated, the palace was abandoned, it was not until the 7th century that locals occupied the palace once more to escape the Croats. After this time, locals built their homes within its walls.

The palace remained unknown until the Scottish architect, Robert Adam surveyed the structure in the 16th century. Inspired by its design, the architect based his idea of neoclassicism on the palace.

Today, the building is locally regarded as the most important building in Split and on the Adriatic coast: it is the most well-preserved Roman structure in the world.

Set in the heart of Split, you’ll find the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, known locally as the Sveti Dujam, made up of a church complex which formed from an Imperial Roman mausoleum. The exterior is circled by 24 stone columns and the Romanesque bell tower, which was added between the 13th and 16th century sits adjacent to the church. Ban Jelačić Square is an Austro-Hungarian style square in the city of Zagreb, named after ban Josip Jelačić, the Ban of Croatia between 1848 and 1859 who was celebrated for his military campaigns during the 1848 revolutions.

The square was founded in the 17th century with an original name of Harmica, but renamed to its current name in 1848. During the 1860’s, a statue of ban Josip Jelačić on a horse was erected but removed in 1947 by the new Communist government of Yugoslavia.

Today, the Ban Jelačić Square, located just down from Zagreb’s old city, is a popular meeting point for locals and travellers today and is only accessed on foot or by tram; cars were banned in 1975. During the 1980’s the square has a mass renovation and during the 1990’s following the breakup of Yugoslavia and after 1990 elections in Croatia, the statue of Ban Jelačić was returned to its former glory in the centre of the square.

The Church of St. Mark is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb and an iconic symbol of the capital. Built in the 13th century, only the bell-tower and a window in the south wall have been preserved. Further additions were made during the 14th century such as the Gothic south portal, one of the church’s most valuable parts.

Perhaps the most unique and recognisable feature of the church is the colourful tiled roof, constructed in 1880 which depicts the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.

The church was reconstructed in the 19th century by Viennese architects and underwent further reconstruction in the 20th century when the walls were painted and the altar was decorated with works of famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.

The church is only open as mass times so be sure to time your visit to be able to see the beautiful interior.

Declared a cathedral in 1093 by King Ladislaus, elaborate construction on the church was completed in 1217 long after his death. The cathedral was attacked by Mongols and restored before the Ottoman Empire began the invasion of Croatia in the 15th century. In an effort to protect the cathedral, fortification began almost immediately, some of which can still be seen today.

With the anticipation of the return of the Ottoman’s, a watchtower was built behind the cathedral in order to protect it. However, after the earthquake of 1880, the tower was damaged beyond repair, the rest of the church was restored in a Neo-Gothic style, including an addition of two spires.

Built at the beginning of the 20th century as part of an urban renovation of Ljubljana, the Dragon Bridge is a concrete bridge in Vienna Secession style that straddles the Ljubljanica River.

The Dragon Bridge replaced an earlier oak bridge named Butcher’s Bridge which was built in 1819 but damaged during an earthquake in the latter part of the 19th century. It was decided that a reinforced concrete bridge would replace it and would be intended for motorised traffic. The bridge opened to traffic in 1901 and was completed in 1907.

Its name is derived from the dragons that were designed and added by architect Giorgio Zaninovich.

Most visitors to Lake Bohinj are overwhelmed by its stillness and serenity. People come here to chill out, swim in the crystal waters, cycle and walk the trails as well as go kayaking and horse riding in the midst of the stunning scenery.

The region of Bohinj, home to sheep- and goat-herding villages, became isolated for centuries due to poor roads and vertiginous terrain. Even the hamlet named Ukanc on Lake Bohinj’s shore loosely translates to ‘end of the world’. At the beginning of the 20th century, new infrastructure was added included a railway along Lake Bohinj’s shores which once again connected the town.

Although it is now not as difficult to reach Lake Bohinj, the slow pace of life and tranquillity of the past remains true in this region.

All the Viking ships at our museum were ocean-going vessels before they were hauled onto land to be used in burial rituals for their wealthy owners. In the burial mounds, archaeologists unearthed skeletons, beautiful wood carvings and a diverse range of artefacts from the fascinating world of the Vikings.

At the museum, you can see all the beautifully crafted grave gifts found with the ships, ranging from everyday objects and utensils to religious artefacts with breathtaking details.

There are three main ships on display in the exhibition hall: the Oseberg Ship, which took 21 years to restore, is richly decorated and was equipped with lavish burial gifts for the two women on board; the Gokstad was a fast ship, suitable for high sea voyages; and finally, the Tune ship was built from oak around 910 AD and had room for 24 rowers.

The Vigeland Museum is the sculpture museum of Oslo and is dedicated to Gustav Vigeland. The main responsibilities are to take care of the heritage of Gustav Vigeland and to preserve this for the coming generations. Built for the Roman Emperor of the same name between 284-305, the palace occupies half the Old Town of Split, most of which was used as a military garrison. This morning after breakfast, you’ll meet your local guide for a two-hour private walking tour in the most artistic area of Paris: Montmartre. In the early 20th century, Montmartre attracted many famous artists like Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, Degas and more. Your guide will be able to tell you many fun and historical facts along the way. Perched upon one of the largest hills in the city, the Basilica Sacre-Coeur dominates Montmartre, which is in the 18th arrondissement, a district famous for its artistic history.

During the interwar predating WWI, La Belle Epoque artists frequented Montmartre, with the likes of Van Gogh, Picasso, Degas and Monet having studios in the area.

Montmartre is thought to be one of the oldest inhabited areas in the city. Excavations have found items that are estimated to date back to the 3rd century and Roman baths from the 2nd.

The name comes from a story from the 3rd century when the Romans ordered the beheading of the Christian bishop, Saint-Denis. When decapitated, he picked up his head and went down the hill, where he died. From then on, the hill was no longer Mont de Mars but Mont des Martyrs.

Reach the lively Rue de Rivoli where stands the Parisian museum with its famous pyramid. You’ll travel through time with your guide in the world’s most visited museum filled with over 7,000 pieces of art across the many rooms and once was home to French heads of state until 1870. The rest of the day will then be free to spend as you wish.

Officially known as the Great Louvre, this museum is not only a historic monument of France but also the world’s largest art museum. It is the national museum of France which is housed in a large palace in Paris and was the most visited museum in the world in 2017.

This central landmark is located on the bank of the River Seine which flows through Paris. It houses over 38,000 objects ranging from pre-historic ancient civilisations to the 21st century covering an area of over 72,000 square metres.

The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace which was built in the late 12th century under the orders of Phillip II. Due to the city’s expansion, various changes in the fortress’ use and the expansion of the building itself changed a lot from the time between Phillip II’s rule and 1793 when it was decreed that it should become a museum during the French Revolution.

Closing again in 1801 for structural renovation, the museum reopened under Napoleon’s reign but following his abdication, many of the works were seized. The museum’s collections increased significantly during the reign of Louise XVIII and Charles X and have grown steadily since.

The museum today is split into a number of different departments, which are: Egyptian Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Paintings; Prints and Drawings.

Covering an area of 11,000m² of underground Paris, the Catacombs of Paris is a labyrinth of tunnels made from former quarries. Inside the matrix of tunnels, millions of bones belonging to over six million people from various Parisian cemeteries rest in the 1.7 kilometres of tunnels open to visitors.

The Paris Catacombs are an extremely unique site. It was created to eliminate the problem of the city’s overflowing cemeteries and work began on creating the catacombs, also known as the Paris Ossuary in 1774.

Each night from 1774 to 1776, wagons filled with the remains of people from many of Paris’ cemeteries proceeded into the former mine shafts near Rue de la Tombe-Issoire. Up until the 19th century, when this underground matrix became popular with concerts and events, it was largely forgotten about. In 1874, it opened to the public.

Notre-Dame de Paris, which translates to ‘Our Lady of Paris’, is a medieval Catholic cathedral and one of the most famous sites in Paris. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the Notre-Dame de Paris dates back to the middle ages.

Situated at the far end of the Île de la Cité, work began on the cathedral in 1160 and was completed by 1260, although the original masterpiece was modified several times over the following centuries. Interest in the building increased hugely after the publication of Victor Hugo’s novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1831.

During the French Revolution in the 18th century, the Notre-Dame de Paris was severely damaged but restored to its former glory in the 19th century including being cleared of years of soot to return it to its former colour, the one you see today.

Visitors flock to this stunning cathedral to gaze in awe at his stained glass and rose windows, the steeples and the fascinating gargoyles, and the towers which, if climbed, offer stunning panoramic views of Paris.

Sadly, this iconic symbol of Paris caught fire in 2019, great contributions have been made to ensure that it is restored to its original splendour. The building will not be accessible until this is complete.

Found between the Place de la Concorde and Place Charles de Gaulle, the Champs-Elysees is arguably the most famous street in the city, well-known for its high-end boutique shops, cafes and theatres. The street forms part of the Axe de Historique, a line of monuments and statues that form Paris’ top attractions today.

Fronted by the Arc de Triomphe, respectively, the street becomes a site of celebration once a year for the Bastille Day military parade, which has been held annually since 1880, more or less. The street has seen parades pass through for centuries, acting as the main site of military celebration in the city.

The street also becomes a finishing line for the Tour de France in the summer.

On the banks of the River Seine in Paris is where you’ll find the stunning railway-station-come-museum, known as Musée d’Orsay. Opened in 1986, the museum holds a grand and stunning collection of French art, such as paintings, sculptures, furniture and photography, dating from the period of 1848-1914.

The Musée d’Orsay encompasses the largest collection impressionist and post-Impressionist artistic treasures from famous painters including the likes of Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, and Van Gogh.

Sitting opposite the Tuileries Gardens, which houses the Musee de l’Orangerie, this museum has an interesting history. The museum is housed in the former Orsay railway station which was built between 1898 and 1900 which is a stunning work of art in itself with its arched roofs allowing natural light to stream into the galleries below.

Once known as Lutetia, Île de la Cité is one of two remaining natural islands on the River Seine within the city of Paris. The island is home to some of the most famous Parisian sights including the Pont Neuf, the Pont de l’Archevêché and Notre Dame cathedral, among many others.

Île de la Cité is the oldest settlement in Paris and until the 1850s, this area was largely residential but has since been filled with many of the cities other buildings that sit amongst the stunning landmarks.

A city steeped in medieval history, walking through Bayeux is like walking through a life-size architecture museum: Romanesque and Gothic architecture face timber-framed houses and cobbled streets; elegant mansions, townhouses with towers and private residences that add an air of grandeur to its streets. Bayeux can be confined to two major attractions: the Bayeux tapestry and the grand Notre Dame Cathedral.

The Bayeux tapestry is a 70-metre long woven textile piece that depicts William of Normandy’s conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings. Probably commissioned by William’s half-brother, the piece brings together 70 scenes to tell the story of the Duke of Normandy’s conquest. Despite its turbulent past and several attempts to damage the piece, it is now in the Bayeux Museum.

Marking the centre of the city, the Notre-Dame Cathedral exemplifies Norman architecture in all its magnificence. It was created in the presence of William the Conqueror, with later Gothic additions that perfectly compliment its origins.

The largest Second World War military cemetery in Normandy, La Cambe is the final resting place of over 21,000 German soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Normandy in 1944.

The site contains nearly double the number of graves as compared to the nearby Normandy American Military Cemetery which honours the American soldiers who died during the D-Day landings and the events surrounding it.

Originally a battlefield graveyard with German and American war dead buried in adjacent fields, once the war finished many of the American soldiers’ bodies were taken back to the US or moved to the nearby Normandy American Cemetery.

Originally, following the end of the Second World War, there were around 8,000 German graves at la Cambe but a further 12,000 were moved here in the following decade some sites around Normandy.

A sleepy, quaint town in France with became involved in one of the greatest resources in military history on the night of 5th June 1944 during the Second World War.

During the Normandy Invasion, 30 American paratroopers dropped into the town and the area surrounding it which has been occupied by German forces since 1940. The next two days ensured a battle between the two forces, defending several major points in the town including the bridges of la Fière and Chef-du-Pont.

Following D-Day (6th June 1944), reinforcement troops landed on the nearby Utah beach to clear the town of German forces. Sainte-Mere-Eglise is one of the most popular places to begin exploring the D-Day beaches and the history that surrounds it.

As well as this incredible history, you can wander the well-preserved town as admire its historic buildings, wash houses and fountains, manors and the beautiful natural landscapes and seascapes close by.

A major, if not one of the most important, landmarks of the D-Day Landings on June 6th 1944, Utah Beach was the westernmost beach of the five landing areas of the Normandy Invasion of the Second World War.

Utah Beach was a late addition to the strategy but it became a major part in the defeat of the Nazis during this war. There were three phases to the D-Day operation; one was the air landings which were centred on Utah Beach, the other was the naval and air landings of the Atlantic Wall and the last was the seaborne landings on the six beaches (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword).

Today, Utah Beach is a major starting point for those that wish to explore Normandy and gain a deeper insight into the operations that took place here and pay their respects to the lives lost at the nearby cemeteries.

A 100-foot cliff at the end of a promontory overlooking the English Channel, Pointe du Hoc was occupied by a German battery and was considered one of the most important targets for the American and British allies on D-Day (6th June 1944) during World War II. It was the highest point between the landings at Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east.

Heroically, US Rangers scaled the 100-foot cliff to capture the German battery, but not without a great loss of life. Point du Hoc is one of the few places in Normandy where you can observe the bomb-scarred terrain and craters left by them.

Today, you can visit this poignant position and the battery to learn that it would have been like during this time.

On June 6th 1944, an incredible armada of Allied troops including British, American, Canadian and more, landed by air onto Normandy’s beaches to begin the liberation of Europe from years of Nazi occupation on a day that we now know as D-Day.

By exploring this coast, you can learn all about the operations that lead to overcoming the Nazis. The 60-mile stretch of coastline which is now commonly known as the D-Day Beaches was split into five sectors – Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah.

Omaha is known as the beach where the American troops suffered the worst fate on this day. The incoming bombs had done little in wiping out the German positions along this stretch and upon arrival, the American soldiers were destroyed by German fire which came across this long stretch of beach known as Omaha Beach.

Despite the losses, a number of American soldiers made it up the slopes of the beach and took the German strongholds from behind. Today, you can explore this stretch of beach and imagine what it may have been like during this historical event in 1944.

Situated on the stretch of coast between Arromanches and Grandcamp Maisy, the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is a vast 70-hectare site which overlooks the Omaha Beach.

The cemetery honours the lives of the American soldiers who landed on the beaches along this coastline of France on D-Day; without them and the defeat of the Nazis, it would have been a very different world.

The cemetery and memorial is home to over 9,380 graves of those that lost their lives during the D-Day landings and subsequent operations during the Second World War. The very atmosphere of this cemetery is moving.

A Wonder of the Western World, Mont Saint-Michel is an island that consists of a walled commune of around 50 people. The island juts out from the coastline, topped by a monastery from which it got its name. The buildings are arranged below to represent the ascension to God, marked by the monastery, the island has had this structure since the 8th century.

With its distance from the land, the island was only accessible to mainlanders at low tide, which acted as its main defence, alongside a small garrison for over a hundred years, until Louis XI conquered the island and turned it into a prison.

Now connected by a pathway, the buildings within the walls are regarded as historical monuments, the abbey itself was designed by an Italian architect as chosen by the Duke of Normandy in the 12th century.

Romanesque in design, the abbey was built to have a network of underground crypts and chapels to form a strong upward formation that can be clearly seen today.
