This Tokyo highlights tour will begin in Asakusa, which has an old-style atmosphere. There, you will visit the shopping street Nakamise Dori and the Sensoji Temple, which is home to the iconic big red paper lanterns.

One of Tokyo’s most colourful temples, the Senso-ji –also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple– is Tokyo’s oldest.

In the year 628, is it said that two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River. They put the statue back but it returned again and again, and so, to please the goddess, a temple was built by the river and dedicated to her, it was completed in 645.

You are first greeted by a gate and the main entrance of the temple, Kaminarimon, the Thunder Gate, which is the symbol of Asakusa and the city of Tokyo before walking along the 200-metre Nakamise shopping street. Lined with shops that date back to the Edo period that sell souvenirs and local snacks, the street takes you to the second gate of the temple that will lead you to the Main Hall and a five-storey pagoda.

The buildings in the centre of the temple are 17th-century reconstructions of the originals which were destroyed during the war.

Once home to a shrine that was dedicated to a fire-fighting deity, Akihabara is now home to many electronic shops which led to its affectionate nickname, Akihabara Electronic Town.

The area became increasingly popular with diehard manga and anime fans, the Tokyo otaku due to the comic shops that intersperse the electronic stores, which makes for a slightly overwhelming atmosphere among the vibrant city lights. However, this is made a little calmer by the pedestrianised streets.

Born in 1852, Emperor Meiji was the first emperor of modern Japan and came to to the throne in 1867 after Japan’s feudal era came to an end and the emperor was given his rightful power. During his reign, Japan underwent modernisation and westernisation to align with the rest of the world.

The shrine was completed in 1920, eight years after the passing of the emperor and six years after the empress had passed. Unfortunately, during the second world war, the shrine was almost completely destroyed but rebuilt shortly after.

One of the most important temples in Nikko’s World Heritage Area, Rinnoji was founded by the Buddhist monk who bought Buddhism to Nikko in the 8th century, Shodo Shonin.

Of the 38 buildings in this temple complex, the Sanbutsudo Hall is one of the most important as it is home to three giant Buddha statues. The statues, each made of wood and gold lacquered are regarded as Buddhist manifestations of Nikko’s three mountain deities. A recent renovation lasting a decade was completed in early 2019 and the Sanbutsudo Hall has now been returned to its former glory.

Within the complex, you’ll also find a treasure house and Shoyoen, a small Japanese style garden which is located behind the treasure house. The garden is popular with photographers due to its beautiful autumn colours and many maple trees.

The final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years until the mid-19th century, Toshogu Shrine was initially a simple mausoleum that was enlarged during the 1600s to what you can see today.

Intricately decorated, the complex boasts over 55 buildings nestled in a beautiful forest. The buildings are coated in wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf, a lavish decoration not seen anywhere else in Japan. Up until the Meiji Period, it was common to see both Shinto and Buddhist elements in these shrines, which is why you’ll see them here.

The entire complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, particular highlights as you wander the perfectly laid out paths and stairways include Ishidorii (Stone Torii Gate), Gojunoto (Five-Story Pagoda), Omotemon (Front Gate) and Sanjinko (Three Sacred Storehouses).

Dedicated to the sufferings of the city as the first to be the victim of a nuclear attack, the Peace Memorial Park is a lasting memory of the direct and indirect victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, of which there were 140,000.

Designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, the park was once the busiest part of the city, as a commercial hub and a residential area that was reduced to rubble after it was bombed. What is now an open-air park is scattered with memorials, museums, monument and lecture halls in memory of the travesty of nuclear attacks and as a point of advocacy for world peace.

The Peace Memorial Ceremony is held here annually.

The highest peak of Miyajima, from Mount Misen you can see Hiroshima from across the Seto Inland Sea on clear days.

From the town of Miyajima, you can take the ropeway to the peak of the mountain, however, there are several trails you can take, should you wish to climb: the Momijidani Course, the Daisho-in Course and the Omoto Course. The easiest, while still offering spectacular views is the Daisho-in Course. All of the trails take between one and two hours, dependent on your speed.

The mountain peak is surrounded by Buddhist temples and shrine, you’ll also be able to visit the Shishi-Iwa Observatory. Along the way, you could be accompanied by some shy deer and, on occasion, a wild monkey.

Kyoto’s most sought after attraction, the Fushimi Inari Shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which line a number of trails behind its main buildings.

Sitting at the foot of Mount Inari, 233 metres above sea level, these trails lead into the wooded forest of this sacred which belongs to the shrine. There are several thousand shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, but Fushimi Inari Taisha is the most important.

As foxes are believed to be Inari’s messengers, you’ll find many fox statues throughout the grounds of Fushimi Inari Taisha.

Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple, the temple’s official name is Rokuon-ji literally meaning ‘Deer Garden Temple’. It is a designated National Special Historic and a National Special Landscape site by UNESCO.

Kinkaku-ji history dates back to 1397 when the villa was purchased from the Saionji family by shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and transformed into the Golden Pavillion. This was burned down by a novice monk who was then imprisoned. He was released soon after with signs of mental illnesses that needed to be cared for. The restoration you see today was made in 1955.

Built in the 8th century, Kiyomizu-dera is an independent Buddhist temple that looks over Kyoto. The temple structures you see today were made around 1633 – not a single nail has been used.

Neighbouring a waterfall, this is where it takes its name from, roughly translating to ‘pure water’. The temple was formerly associated with the Hosso sect of Yogacara Mahayana Buddhism before turning to a modern, not do well-known sect known as “Kitahosso”.

Having stood through so many periods of Japanese history, the Kiyomizu has witnessed many traditions and tales that remain with the structure, one of which still holds today. With the main hall facing the Otowa waterfall, you can drink the water to make a wish.

This Kiyomizu-dera temple is not to be confused with the other Kiyomizu-dera Mayahana Buddhist temple, founded by the priest Nichiren.

One of the most impressive sights in Japan, Todai-ji Temple dates back to 752 making it also one of the most important temples in Japanese history.

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998 along with the other historic monuments of Ancient Nara, Todai-ji Temple was commissioned by Emperor Shomu to bring peace during this period of turmoil following the loss of its son, crop failures and an attempted coup.

Todai-ji Temple is home to the Daibutsu (Great Buddha), Japan’s largest Buddha statue at 15 metres tall and is cast from 400 tonnes of bronze. At the temple, there is also a unique column with a hole in it; it is said that if you climb through the whole, you will be blessed with good luck and granted enlightenment in your next life.

The surroundings of the Todai-ji Temple are also beautiful, known for the roaming deer, extensive gardens, several museums and treasure halls.

Nara’s most famous and impressive Shinto shrine, the entrance to the Kasuga-Taisha Shrine leads you along a beautiful forested path which passes through a deer park and is lined with hundreds of stone lanterns. Inside you’ll find the interior of the shrine is decorated with hundreds of bronze lanterns, for which is it famous for.

Originally founded in 768, the shrine has been rebuilt several times over the years. Deer are believed to the sacred messengers of the Shinto gods, so you will often find them roaming the surrounding terrain near a Shinto shrine like this one.

The facade of the Kasuga-Taisha Shrine greets you with beautiful vermillion columns contrasting against the white walls and cedar park roofs. As well as the deers, the wisteria flower, which is the family crest of the Fujiwara family which the temple is dedicated to, appears on carvings and trees throughout the complex. In May, many people flock to the Kasuga-Taisha Shrine to see the wisteria trees in full bloom.

Osaka Castle is widely known as an emblem of the power and fortune of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. In 1583, Hideyoshi began construction at the former site of Honganji Temple and completed the magnificent castle, which was reputed as being unparalleled in the country.

Hideyoshi, having employed the castle as his stronghold, succeeded in quelling the wars which had continued for more than one century, thereby unifying the entire nation.

After Hideyoshi’s death, Ieyasu Tokugawa, who worked for Hideyoshi as his chief retainer, was appointed to the Shogun and he established the shogunate (government) in Edo (Tokyo). In 1615, Ieyasu ruined the Toyotomi family and destroyed the castle in the Summer War of Osaka.

Thereafter, the Tokugawa shogunate reconstructed Osaka Castle. It held the castle under its direct control until 1868, when the Tokugawa shogunate lost power and the castle fell. In 1931, the Main Tower of the Castle was reconstructed in the centre of Osaka Castle, which was used as a military base, with funds raised by the citizens.

The present-day Main Tower is the third generation. It follows the Main Tower from the Toyotomi period, which was destroyed by fire during the Summer War, and the tower from the Tokugawa period, which was struck by lightning and was burned down.

The first ever temple built by the state, Shitennoji is one of the oldest temples in Japan, founded in 503.

Built on the 9th century, the Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. The first mention of Prambanan was in the Syiwagrha Inscription written in 856 AD, having been built by the Mataram Kingdom around the time.

It consists of three main temples for the Trimurti; Shiva the destroyer of the universe, Vishnu the keeper of the universe, and Brahma the creator of the universe. Back in the glory days of the old Mataram Kingdom, Prambanan was used as a Candi Agung for various royal and religious ceremonies, .

The high structures are typical of Hindu architecture, the layout of the temple complex is in a Mandala, similar to Borobudur. As a symbol of the Hindu cosmos, the temple is vertically divided into three parts. The three parts are divided into Jaba and Bhurloka; Tengahan and Bhuvarloka, and Njeron and Svarloka.

Prambanan is high and slim compared to Borobudur, with the main Shiva shrine standing at 47 meters in the middle of the complex surrounded with smaller temples. At the Garbagriha (the innermost sanctum) of this temple sits a three metre statue of Shiva.

The central body of the temples and the central square of the complex represents the ‘middle world’, a place for those who have left their worldly possessions to see the light of truth. The middle world has four rows of 224 small shrines, all are identical. This compound consists of four levels lined with stupas, with the innermost level being the highest. All stupas in this compound are the same size.

Unfortunately, almost all structures in the middle square are now in ruins as the temple was abandoned in the 10th century when the court moved to East Java. Although, locals knew about the ruins, the site was not excavated until early 19th century. Before this time, the Javanese developed legends around its creation.

The monument guides pilgrims through an extensive system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the walls and the balustrades. Borobudur has the largest and most complete ensemble of Buddhist reliefs in the world.

Formed by the eruption of Mount Prau, Dieng Plateau is a caldera complex that, at one point, was filled with water and is now dried up. The area still has volcanic activity in the form of poisonous lakes and sulphuric fumes.

Around 2,000 metres above sea level, the Javanese Hindu’s built many temples here, declaring its sanctity, however only 8 remains. The name itself derives from Sanskrit to mean Abode of the Gods and was built in the same style as Prambanan, during the reign of Sanjaya Dynasty. The temples were named after the characters in an ancient Javanese Hindu legend.

Part of the Tengger massif, Mount Bromo is an active volcano, 2,329 metres above sea level.

While Mount Bromo is not the highest peak in the massif, it is the most well-known, attracting thousands of tourists who want to see its steaming craters every year.

Found within the plain that is known as the Sea of Sand, Mount Bromo was named after the Hindu God, Brahma, derived from the Javanese pronunciation of the name. On the 14th day of the Javanese Hindu Yadnya Kasada festival, locals travel to the mountains to give offerings to appease the gods. The festival dates back to some of the very first people to settle around the mountain.

The volcano erupts every few years, sometimes less, sometimes more – it is a volcano! The Indonesian Centre of Vulcanology and Geology Hazard Mitigation (ICVGH) send out warnings if they suspect an eruption may happy, encourages locals and visitors to remain a specific distance from the volcano, which is usually around one kilometre.

You will wake up before sunrise, enjoy a quick breakfast and hop into a Jeep that will take you to see Mount Bromo. The jeep first takes you to Penanjakan, where you will watch the jaw-droppingly beautiful sunrise over Bromo. You will continue by Jeep, driving through a desert-like landscape to get to the foot of Mount Bromo, one of the most iconic mountains of Indonesia. This majestic and still active volcano sits inside the massive Tengger caldera, a volcanic crater, and is surrounded by Laut Pasir which translates to ‘sea of sand. To get to the crater, you can climb to the top.

Uluwatu is a Hindu sea temple, set on a rock that, in folklore, is said to be part of the water goddess of Bali, Dewi Danu’s petrified barque. Hoan Kiem Lake, meaning “Lake of the Returned Sword” is also known as Hồ Gươm Sword Lake, is a lake in part of the historical centre of Hanoi.

The famous story that plays an important part in Vietnamese culture that of Le Loi, boating around Hoan Kiem Lake when a Golden Turtle God approach him and asked for Heaven’s Will, the magic sword.

The God had given the sword to Le Loi to fight off the Ming dynasty. The lake and the tower in the centre of the lake were named to commemorate the legend.

On the northern part of the stunning Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple is considered to be the most visited temple in Hanoi.

Established in the late-19th century, St Joseph’s Cathedral is a Neo-Gothic cathedral representative of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, today it is the meeting place for Catholic congregations from around the city, particularly for mass on Saturday evening.

Directly influenced by the Notre Dame in Paris, it was built by the French colonial government of what was then regarded as Indochina. Stain glass windows were imported from France, and the ceiling of the structure replicates those seen in medieval Europe. Having opened in 1886, it’s the oldest church in the city.

Today, the square outside the cathedral is a hub of activity from morning till night. The square is lined with coffee shops selling traditional egg coffee and a popular snack, sunflower seeds, which you have to crack with your teeth to open.

Pulling up a tiny stool in the area is a great way to pass an hour or two people-watching.

The Temple of Literature is the site of Vietnam’s oldest university and is dedicated to one of the world’s most famous scholars, Confucius.

Inside the temple grounds, huge steles rest on the backs of even larger stone turtles, in Vietnam’s culture, the turtle represents longevity. The steles recorded the names of the successful candidates who later became mandarins in the Emperor’s court.

The Temple of Literature is often cited as one of Hanoi’s most picturesque tourist attractions. Originally built as a university in 1070, at the time of Emperor Lý Thánh Tôn, the building is extremely well preserved and is a superb example of traditional-style Vietnamese architecture.

The various pavilions, halls, statues and stelae of doctors are places where offering ceremonies, study sessions and the strict exams of the Đại Việt took place. Just before the Vietnamese New Year celebration of Tết, calligraphists will assemble outside the temple and write wishes in Hán characters. The artworks are given away as gifts or are used as home decorations for the special occasion.

One of the largest and most beautiful among the 7,000 islands, Sung Sot – Surprise Cave, is one of the many staggering results of the 500 million-year-old formation that is Halong Bay. The name was given upon its first international discovery when a French person claimed that it was a cave full of surprises.

A vast open accumulation of stalactites and stalagmites, the rocks appear to be dripping down from the ceiling formed from Karst limestone. When first entering the cave, some feel disapointed by its small size, but little do they know what is waiting for them inside, as the cave reveals itself as a never ending grotto that feels like it has been separated into two “rooms”.

Fujian (Phuc Kien) Assembly Hall was built around 1690 as a point of congregation for the Chinese ethnic group from Fujian. It was transformed into a temple at a later date as a shrine to the deity named Thien Hau – the goddess of sea who protects fisherman from danger.

An old folk story among locals says that the Chinese of Hoi An found a statue of the goddess on the beach and decided to build a temple to worship it.

The Hoi An Museum of Folk Culture belongs to the Relic Preservation Center of Hoi An and is located in Hoi An ancient town. This is the first place in the country that has a museum on this subject.

This museum has collected over 600 objects, but only displays about 500 of them. 90% of these objects are original, sorted by topics: folklore, traditional occupation, traditional clothing, folklore games etc.

The exhibition is special as this is the first time such a collection of original objects has been displayed. All more than 100 years old, the objects depict the local daily life: Vietnamese family customs, Chinese family customs, songs and dances. This museum has made it possible for all these to be introduced to the public.

Tan Ky Old House is an almost perfect example of an 18thcentury merchant home.

In spite of financial hard times and the devastation brought by annual floods, seven generations of the family have managed to keep the house in good condition. So, although it is not the oldest building in Hoi An, it is certainly one of the best preserved.

Symbolic of Hoi An, this stunning 16th-century Japanese bridge is one of a kind – its the only covered bridge in the world to house a temple, joining the Chinese quarter to the Japanese.

Although the architect of the bridge is unknown, the bridge is considered representative of the Japanese community of Hoi An, as well as being owned by them. Having been fully restored to its arched originality –having previously been trampled down to make way for cars– the bridge is a stunning example of Japanese architecture with thousands treading its path each day.

Hoi An, formerly known as Fai-Fo or Faifoo, is located in Viet Nam’s Quang Nam Province and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the ancient town was a busy international trading port for the Chinese and Japanese.

The ancient town of Hoi An is exceptionally well-preserved today and visiting gives travellers a chance to contemplate and admire the historical beauty of this town. Built by geomancers of the Nguyen Dynasty, the construction of the city buildings began in 1804, with many buildings being added over the years of Emperor reign. The Citadel was built as a walled fortress containing a staggering 160 building, orientated to face the Huong River to the southeast.

The reign of the last Vietnamese Emperor ended in the mid-1900s. At the time, the Imperial City (also known as the Purple Forbidden City) had many buildings and hundreds of rooms. It suffered from termite and cyclone damage but was still very impressive.

Major losses occurred in 1947 when the Citadel was seized. The French-led a counter-attack and the six-week battle destroyed many of the major structures. The core of the city including the Imperial Palace was burned. The Citadel came under fire again in the early morning hours of the 31st of January, 1968, as part of the Tet Offensive.

The battle caused extensive damage; out of 160 buildings, only 10 major sites remain, such as the Thái Hòa and Cần Thanh temples; Thế Miếu and Hiển Lâm Các. Many bullet holes left over from the Vietnam War can be observed on the stone walls in the remnants left in the centre of the palace.

The city was made a UNESCO site in 1993. The buildings that still remain are still being restored and what was left of the 10 buildings are well-preserved.

Constructed between 1864 and 1867, Tu Duc Tomb is one of the most impressive of the royal mausoleums in Vietnam. It is said to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque examples of Nguyen Dynasty architecture, who ruled Vietnam from the capital city of Hue for 140 years.

Designed by Emperor Tu Duc, the tomb was to be used before and after his death, before as a retreat where the emporer would go hunting, write poetry or relax in the vast grounds. One of the largest works of architecture of the Nguyen Dynasty, Tu Duc tomb is reflective of the king’s romantic characteristics.

The huge complex which holds the tomb, a lake, several gardens and temples required a huge amount of labour and money to complete. The immense labour resulted in a coup plot but it was discovered and suppressed before being carried out.

Interestingly, the Tu Duc tomb is not where the emporer was actually laid to rest. His actual tomb was built in secret and those that built it were killed following its completion so that its actual location could never be revealed.

A magnificent example of Vietnamese architecture, this is an iconic seven-story pagoda is regarded as the unofficial symbol of the city with a unique folklore story behind it.

According to royal records, Nguyen Hoang of the Ly Dynasty was told a local legend of an old lady, known as Thiên Mụ (literally “celestial lady”), dressed in red and blue who sat rubbing her cheeks. She foretold that a lord would come and erect a pagoda on the hill to pray for the country’s prosperity.

She then vanished after making her prophecy. Upon hearing this, Nguyen Hoang ordered the construction of a temple at the site, founding Thiên Mụ Pagoda to fulfil her wishes.

The Cu Chi Tunnels are a network of tunnels, stretching for over 200km, that became legendary during the 1960s. The tunnels played a vital part in the U.S.-Vietnam War in that they allowed the Viet Cong to control a large rural area only 30 to 40 km from Saigon. At its height, the tunnel system stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border.

The network, parts of which were several levels deep, included innumerable trap doors, specifically constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens. Today, the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience and feel of what underground life during the war must have been like.

The tunnels have been widened for our benefit (otherwise, we would not be able to enter them!). For those interested, there is even the opportunity to try an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range.

Of all of Vietnam’s tourist attractions, the one you should not miss is the iconic Reunification Palace. It was first designed as the residence and workplace of the U.S backed former Vietnam President Ngo Dinh Diem until his death.

During the fall of Saigon in 1975, the North Vietnamese Army manoeuvred a tank and crashed through the main gate of the palace, signifying the end of the Vietnam War.

The place was designed by award-winning French architect and is said to be in harmony with Feng Shui principles. Lush tropical gardens surround this five-level building, which hides secret rooms, entertainment lounges, telecommunications centre and a basement housing a warren of tunnels.

Interestingly, the war command room still has huge maps and old communication pieces of equipment intact, along with the basement labyrinth. To date, the conference room still hosts important national events, such as the recent APEC summit and the signing of the WTO accord. The building has been left largely as it was, so history buffs can have a deep exploration of the global history here.

Officially Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception, the unique colour of this cathedral makes it stands out from its surroundings within the downtown part of the city.

Built between 1877 and 1883, Notre Dame Cathedral rises up romantically from the heart of Ho Chi Minh City facing Dong Khoi Road, one of the oldest streets in what was once Saigon. This reddish brick, neo-Romanesque church is fronted by two square towers topped with iron spires, surrounded by gardens and a statue of the Virgin Mary.

All of the building materials were imported from France; the exterior of the cathedral was made with bricks from Toulouse. Although the contractor did not use coated concrete, these bricks have retained their bright red colour until today. The walls of the interior are inlaid with devotional tablets and some stained glass windows.

Neighbouring the basilica is the city’s post office, a typical example of French-colonialist architecture that is emblematic of the city.

Designed by Alfred Foulhoux, the post office is often erroneously credited as being the work of Gustave Eiffel, or a collaboration between Foulhoux and Hanoi-based Auguste Henri Vildieu.

The Gothic-styled Saigon Central Post Office began its life in 1886 and remains one of the country’s most celebrated structures. Inside, beneath a long, domed roof, the walls decorated with French colonial maps met by a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, while the elaborately tiled floors complete the refined look, typical of the era. Today, the post office not only remains fully functional but impressively well-preserved.

Five provinces circle Tonle Sap Lake, totalling around three million people around its banks; 90% of them earn a living by catching fish and farming.

Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater in South East Asia and its dimension changes depending on the monsoon and dry season. During raining season from June to October, the lake is filled by water flowing from the Mekong with 14 metres in depth and expands the surface of 10,000 square kilometres. In dry season from November to May it is around 3,000 square kilometres with two meres in depth and water flows out from the Lake to the Mekong, in and out flowing is the natural phenomenon occurrences.

The flooded forest surrounding the edge of the lake is the best shelter and also very important for all kinds of fish spawned and breeding babies. This lake provides a home to much biodiversity; over 300 species of freshwater fish, snakes, crocodiles, tortoises, turtles and otters. There are more than 100 varieties of water birds including storks and pelicans.

During your boat trip on Tonle Sap, you will see a fishermen’s floating village with floating schools, police stations, pagodas and many houses. The floating village moves from place to place following water levels and current.

Angkor is an architectural and spiritual wonder with intricate bas-reliefs and numerous devatas, it truly is a wonder.

Ta Prohm is arguably one of the most atmospheric temples in the whole of the Angkor complex. It is world famous for the jungle trees and huge roots that have intertwined themselves through the walls and stones of the temple. This temple is also commonly referred to as the ‘Tomb Raider Temple’ for its appearance in the Lara Croft movie.

Originally built as a Buddhist monastery and university in the 12-13th centuries during the reign of Khmer King Jayavarman VII, it was later abandoned like most temples in Angkor and left for the jungle to envelop it. Ta Prohm stands as a mighty symbol of how when empires fall, the glorious power of nature continues regardless of what is in its path.

The temple was intentionally left in much the same way as it was built, only the most necessary work to prevent further deterioration and collapse was done. However lately, things have changed at the Ta Prohm. A number of trees have been removed, with additional restoration efforts carried out to protect the temple being damaged by the roots and from the danger of falling trees destroying the monument. The temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

The South Gate of Angkor Thom is the best-preserved gate of the five gates within the Angkor complex. Its fine preservation means that the South Gate is kept high of the list of attractions within Angkor.

It is approached from the outside via a causeway that extends around 50 metres across a moat. On each side of the causeway are railings fashioned with 54 stone figures engaged in the performance of a famous Hindu story known as ‘the myth of the Churning of the Ocean’.

The mythical beings guard the city with their grimacing expressions, almond shaped eyes and conical headdresses. Wherever you move, their eyes seem to follow you.

It was built under King Jayavarman VII and its religious symbolism and feature have close similarities to the Bayon Temple, which was built under the rule of the same king.

Perhaps the most famous temple in Cambodia after Angkor Wat, Bayon temple is actually one of the most unique temples in the country. Located in the centre of the Angkor Thom ancient city within the mighty Angkor Complex, it was once the state temple for Jayavarman VII and the temple definitely epitomises this celebrated king.

This 12th-century work of art, also known as Prasat Bayon, is best known for its 54 gothic towers featuring 216 big stone smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara peering down at its visitors. The temple is also enhanced by the 1.2-kilometre stretch of raised carvings, known as bas-reliefs, featuring 11,000 figures.

Built primarily as a Buddhist temple, following Jayavarman VII’s death it was consequently altered by the monarchs that followed. Most notably, during King Jayavarman VIII’s reign, the Khmer empire reverted back to Hinduism, therefore changing the temple.

Further alterations were made in the centuries that followed when the dominant religion became Buddhism once again but eventually, the temple was abandoned to be shrouded in jungle growth. During the 20th century, the temple was once again rediscovered and restored to its former glory you’ll see today.

Banteay Srei is a 10th-century Khmer temple dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva. This temple, of which the name means ‘Citadel of the Women’, is particularly unique to the other temples in Angkor due to being constructed of pink sandstone and for being unusually small in size by Angkorian standards.

The sandstone enables you to observe the elaborate and decorative wall carvings that are some of the finest found in the world; you can still see them today. The temple is prided as some of the most stunning achievements of Angkorian and Khmer artisan work and is one of the most well-preserved temples in Cambodia.

Construction of Banteay Sri began in AD 967 and the name denotes that the temple must have been built by a woman, especially as the hand carvings are suspected to be too delicate to have been done by a man. The carvings feature women with lotus flowers in hand wearing traditional skirts and both male and female divinities.

Almost every centimetre of this building is covered in intricate carvings. Interestingly, this temple is one of the only temples to be commisioned by a brahman, a tutor to Jayavarman V. It was one of the first temples to be restored using the anastylosis method and was a major success leading to many other larger temples being restored with the same techniques.

Whilst its the night markets that are typically geared up for tourists, its the morning markets in Southeast Asia where you’ll see the locals coming to do their shopping.

The Luang Prabang morning market is a particularly wonderful place where you’ll find an array of interesting and authentic food. Fresh locally grown vegetables, meat and freshly caught fish as well as an abundance of snacks for breakfast, Luang Prabang morning market is a hive of activity.

To: Ban Xang Hai

Located on the banks of the Mekong River around 1.5 hours upstream of Luang Prabang, you’ll find the village of Ban Xang Hai. This Mekong village is particularly famous for its whiskey, known as Lao-Lao, the beloved whiskey of the country.

The method, which the villagers refuse to change, remains very traditional. The whiskey is still made using an open fire and earthen jars made in the pottery village of Ban Chan. Scattered along the river in Ban Xang Hai, you’ll find various Lao-Lao producers.

Whilst in the village, you’ll see the process of making Lao-Lao and don’t be surprised if you are offered a little shot of it – it’s a sure-fire way to make friends with the locals!

Overlooking the Mekong River, Pak Ou Caves are one of the most respected holy sites in Lao.

Dating back thousands of years, the twin caves are packed with over 4,000 Buddha icons, the caves host a shrine to the river spirit of ancient Lao beliefs as well as the Lord Buddha which represent the belief of Lao people throughout the ages and is still highly respected in Luang Prabang and around the country.

Set in a dramatic limestone cliff at the point where the Mekong joins the Nam Ou River, the Pak Ou Caves are known individually as Tham Ting (lower) and Tham Theung (upper), both of which have a variety miniature Buddhist images in various positions lining the caves to lead to a shrine.

Looking onto the river, the Royal Palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens, neighbouring one of the most popular streets in Luang Prabang. The structure itself is a combination of Laotian architecture and French-Beaux style, collaboratively giving the aura of grandeur, as the kings former residence.

Within the palace complex has been transformed into a museum that offers an insight into the history of the area, as well as the history and culture of the country as a whole. The exhibition dates back to the Lan Xang Kingdom, builds up through the colonial era and into the present day with a collection of objects, photographs and artworks.

With intricately carved walls and a Tree of Life mosaic, Wat Xiengthong is an extraordinary example of Luang Prabang architecture. Also known as the ‘Golden Tree Monastery’, the temple is of great historic importance as the coronation site for Lao Kings as well as holding rare Buddhist deities.

The Tree of Life mosaic tells the tale of two monks who wanted to create a sanctuary at the conflux of two rivers, next to a flame tree – the story of the founding of the temple, which was constructed in 1560. Although many additions and some renovations have been done, much of the original temple remains.

As one of the most highly architecturally revered buildings in Luang Prabang, there are many beautiful parts to discover, the temple gradually unfolds itself, with artistry to be found on every corner. The main highlight has to be the enormous funeral carriage that was once walked along the streets of Luang Prabang to pay respect to those who had passed.

Towering 100 metres high above Luang Prabang, a trip to the ancient city is not complete without a hike up Mount Phousi. The unmissable mount is in the heart of the old city, surrounded by rivers Nam Khan and the Mighty Mekong.

Although not the easiest of hikes, conquering Mount Phousi is incredibly rewarding, with a stunning panoramic view of the city waiting for you at the top. To break up the journey, you’ll be met by Wat Tham Phou Si and Wat Chom Si, both of which provide alternate views of the Laotian countryside in the distance.

Running from Wat Mai all the way down Sisavangvong Road, Luang Prabang Night Market like the town is a quiet, sleepy market yet still filled with all the souvenirs you could want, along with some interesting additions. Filled to the brim with hand-woven fabrics and unique handmade souvenirs – it’s a feast for the senses, particularly if you make your way to the food alley!

Starting around dusk and running until midnight, the market brings the quiet city to life as hill-tribes women and city dwellers alike come to sell their crafts. If you want to try the vegetarian buffet or any other food for that matter, it is advised to go to eat early.

To: Kuang Si Waterfall

Following the shallow pools in a hillside, you’ll eventually reach this multi-tiered waterfall, stretching up to a great 60- metre height.

The trail past the pools takes you to a well-built wooden bridge that leads you around the falls where you’ll learn about the environmental efforts to protect the beauty of the waterfalls and the nature that surrounds it.

The gushing of Kuang Si Waterfalls creates a resounding sense of calm, however, they do become busy throughout the day, as one of the most famous sites in Laos.

For a more calming experience, you may want to hike up to the source of the waterfall, a challenging, yet reward hike that takes you up a steep incline and through a waterfall staircase before you reach the option to go to some caves or on a short boat ride to the source. Remember to take your shoes, so you can come out the other side!

When back to the main pools of the waterfall, you may want to swim to cool down – be warned, it really is cold!

Just moments from Kuang Si Waterfall, Kuang Si Butterfly Park was started by two passionate Dutch people who wanted to create a research centre and publish extensive research about Laos’ butterflies.

In the park, there are a host of plants that act as a stage for these beautiful insects to shine. You’ll also find some information boards that tell you a little about the efforts to preserve the plants and insects found here that are affected by the environmental issues in Laos.

The last remaining temple after the Siamese occupation destroyed the city in 1828, Wat Sisaket and the 7,000 sculptures inside date between the 16th and 18th centuries. The temple neighbours Wat Phra Kaew, which once held the sacred Emerald Buddha.

The temple is noted for its Siamese Buddhist style, with 5 tiers on the roof and the cloisters that surround the temple that holds 2,000 Buddha images. This could be the only reason that the temple was spared in 1828.

A war monument that centres the city, Patuxay was built between 1957 and 1968, it was known to the French as Monument Aux Morts, its name literally translates to mean Victory Gate.

Designed in typical Laotian style, the monument is dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence against the French. In the monument’s design, you’ll notice the kinnari, a Hindu mythological creature that is half-woman, half-bird who are thought to have come from the Himalayas to protect humans from danger.

The monuments five towers have dual representation; the five principles of peaceful coexistence of the 5 nations of the world and the 5 principles of Buddhism. Both of the sets of principles overlap in many ways. Each part of the monument and the gardens that surround it add to this concept, creating a harmonious dedication to those who fought.

Having moved the capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, Ho Phra Kaew was built in 1565 under the orders of King Setthathirath.

The Royal temple of Wat Prakeo previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha which can now be seen in Bangkok, Thailand. However, His Majesty the King of Laos originally brought the figure from Chiang Mai. The Emerald Buddha remained here for 200 years before the temple was destroyed by the Siamese.

Over the years, the temple experienced much turbulence; it was destroyed several times before reaching its present state, each time the restoration was based on the remains of the original structure, although, today it exhibits a 19th-century Thai style.

In the 1970’s, it was converted from a religious space to a museum, housing some of the best examples of religious art in the country, with some pieces dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries.

Found in the centre of the city, Phra That Luang is a goldcovered stupa that is thought to date back to the 3rd century although the people of Lao believe it was first a Hindu temple in the 1st century.

Regarded as a national symbol and one of the most important Buddhist monuments in Laos, Pha That Luang has undergone a lot of reconstruction due to foreign invasions over the centuries. In fact, over the years it has seen many transformations before it fell to ruin as a Khmer temple in the 13th century.

When Vientiane became the capital of Laos in the 16th century, King Setthathirat ordered the construction of Pha That Luang at the end of the road of the same name, it was surrounded by 30 smaller stupas. The temple contains many references to Lao culture and identity as well as its dedication to Buddhism which inherently gave its importance.

Over the years the stupa was attacked by the Burmese, Siamese and Chinese before being almost completed destroyed in 1828. The French eventually restored it in 1900 based on drawings from a French architect from 1867. After the Franco-Thai War and World War II, it was restored once more.
