Today’s drive is 435 kilometres so it is advisable to make a fairly early start to have some time to explore Etosha National Park before sunset, which is teeming with wildlife. You will be spending three nights in this area, the first two within the park itself and the last night at a private lodge on the eastern edge of the park. There is a network of roads that link the numerous waterholes around Etosha pan and you can explore these at your own leisure throughout the day. Etosha National Park is one of Namibia’s most impressive parks with vibrant wildlife and open plains to see as much activity as possible. If you did not see enough game while out driving during the day, then extra time can be spent at the spotlit waterhole in the evening.

Etosha National Park is unique – it’s unlike anywhere else in Africa. The park gained international recognition for the salt pan that is part of the Kalahari Basin, it’s so large that it can be seen from space, taking up a quarter of the park.

The national park is otherwise known for its abundant wildlife that congregates around the many waterholes that dot the park, giving you almost guaranteed game sightings. The waterholes support a rich diversity of animals, many of whom can be seen all at once at a waterhole. You will also be able to spot many bird species and smaller mammals here too.

Today can be taken at a leisurely pace as it’s only around 100 kilometres to your next stop, Guma Lagoon Camp. Having said this, when the water level drops, it can take quite a long time to negotiate the last section between Etosha 13 and the camp, so allow at least 30-45 minutes for this part. The camp is set on the edge of Guma Lagoon and surrounded by a thick canopy of trees. There is a lovely wooden deck that has views over the water, perfect for spotting wildlife.

Guma Lagoon Camp is a fishermen’s haven and subsequently, a bird watcher’s paradise!

Sitting on the banks of Guma Lagoon in the Okavango Delta, this tent camp offers both self-catering and full-board options while here. Canvas tents line the edge of the lagoon, totalling seven campsites with tents featuring ensuite facilities and shady trees for a little privacy.

Today is set aside for a mokoro traditional canoe trip. This is one of the best ways for really appreciating the beauty of this area. You’ll be gently being poled amongst water lily beds, palm islands and papyrus stands, rich with birdlife including kingfishers, herons, storks and other waterfowl, with the possibility of also seeing hippos, crocodiles and otters. You’ll also have the choice to explore the Okavango during sunset, one of the most magical times on the delta.

The traditional dugout canoe, locally known as a mokoro, was the mode of transport chosen by the Okavango’s first inhabitants, the Bayei and Banoka people. Guma Lagoon Camp offers a choice of day trips that take you into the heart of the Okavango in a mokoro. This is an adventurous safari experience not to be missed.

From Guma Lagoon Camp, a 15-minute boat transfer that passes through a narrow meandering channel will get you to the start of your mokoro experience. From here, you will get onto fibreglass or wooden mokoro which can seat two people. The Head Mokoro Poler will then talk to the group about safety and what to expect on your trip.

You will be poled through the tranquil channels that link the extensive floodplain system to the main river. Water lily beds, palm islands and papyrus stands abound making for the most scenic of experiences. On one of the larger islands, you will have time to have your lunch and a guided walk. There is always a chance of seeing large herds of red lechwe bounding through the water and passing elephants feeding amongst the lush wetland vegetation.

After breakfast, you’ll head south to Ghanzi, some 350 kilometres away. Situated in the village of D’Kar in the Ghanzi district, the Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre is a place where locals and other Basarwa from neighbouring settlements come together to share and strengthen their traditions and culture. The museum has a beautiful permanent exhibition on Basarwa culture.

Apart from its Annual Dance Festival, the centre organises traditional knowledge workshops for local primary school children. Traditional musical instrument lessons are also taught at the workshops. Just 12 kilometres offshore from Cape Town, Robben Island is a small island that acted as a place of exile for those deemed as outcasts and trouble makers for over 400 years.

Used for a series of spells between the 17th and 30th centuries as a prison, hospital and military base, the buildings date back to the late 20th century when it acted as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners. During the apartheid, freedom fighters including Nelson Mandela spent over a quarter of a century in this prison, a strategy to crush their morale and a punishment for their beliefs.

We will get on our 4×4 wheelers and drive all way to Gebel Qatrani located 100 kilometres southwest of Cairo, in the Faiyum Oasis.

The Gebel Qatrani Open Air Museum is located inside the Petrified Forest area, the north of Lake Qaroun few kilometres from Gebel Qatrani and the ancient basalt quarries.

The museum was built early 2018 and yet to be inaugurated soon. It is showcasing fossils of both marine (started in Eocene with the fossil ancestors of Archaeocetes: whales) and continental (with the fossil ancestors of monkeys: Aegyptopithicus; elephants: Phiomia, Palaeomastodon; Arsinoitherium); and several other terrestrial and marshland mammals.

The area of Gebel Qatrani is shown to have been inhabited by the Neolithic Man and reveals an incredible stage of evolution – the use of stone tools.

Situated 150 kilometres south of Cairo, Wadi Al-Hitan is worldfamous for its hundreds of whale fossils, showcasing some of the earliest forms of this animal.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, Wadi Al-Hitan, or Whale Valley as its also known, provides extensive evidence for one of the great mysteries on earth: whales were once a land-based animal and merged into an ocean-going mammal.

Wadi Al-Hitan is incredibly unique; no other site in the world is home to this number or concentration of whale fossils. Set in a beautiful and protected landscape, the fossils at Wadi Al-Hitan are incredibly well preserved.

Covered an area of 113 kilometres-squared most of which is covered by the Wadi El Rayan lakes, Wadi El Rayan consists of seven parts: the upper and lower Lakes , El Rayan springs, El Rayan Falls, El Modawara Mountain, El Rayan Mountain and Wadi El Hitan, known famously as the Valley of the Whales for its incredible whale fossils.

The landscapes of Wadi El Rayan are incredible, full of oases, mountains, rock formations and waterfalls. The waterfalls are perhaps the most famous attraction, where one lake cascades into another.

The wildlife within the reserve also boats white gazelles, Egyptian gazelles, sand foxes and fennec foxes, as well as many rare species of resident birds, migrant birds, eagles and falcons.

Also known as the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings, this area is a long narrow canyon west of the River Nile, once part of the ancient city of Thebes. The Valley of the Kings is the burial site of almost all of the pharaohs from the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties of Egypt which spanned 1539–1075 BCE.

The area is home to 62 tombs, of those that are known, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979 as part of ancient Thebes encompassing Luxor, the Valley of the Queens, and Karnak also.

Fearing the safety of their burials, the kings from this era planned to conceal their tombs in the valley sunken deep into the mountain. The tombs, built in the style of a descending corridor were ridden with deep shafts to baffle thieves.

The walls of the tombs are covered in sculptures and colourful scenes depicting the dead king in the presence of deities. Many of the temples were pillaged during the 21st dynasty, recycled for later use or cleared out to reuse the goods in the royal treasury.

However, one tomb, that of Tutankhamun, who reigned from 1333-23 BCE was concealed and protected by rocks. This lead to the discovery of grand cultural importance in 1922. Many of the artefacts collected from the tomb can now be seen in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Stood west of the River Nile in the city of Luxor in the Theban Necropolis, you’ll find two huge stones statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Dynasty XVIII, known as the Colossi of Memnon.

These statues have stood since 1350 BC, over 3,400 years. Cut from a single block of stone weighing over 1,000 tonnes, they are the first monuments of the necropolis that tourists see upon arrival. The two faceless statues sit at the eastern entrance to the funerary temple of Amenophis III, the largest on the west bank.

Today, you’ll begin the day by making the journey from Luxor to Aswan. Upon arrival in Aswan, you’ll visit one of the bestpreserved ancient monuments in Egypt, the Temple of Horus at Edfu, said to have been built between 237 and 57 BC. Next, you’ll visit the twin Temple of Kom Ombo. Standing on a promontory on a bend in the Nile, the temple is dedicated to two gods which are represented by the temple’s carvings and twin layout. After checking into your hotel, you’ll have some free time.

Built between 237 and 57 BC, this Ptolemaic temple known as the Temple of Horus is one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Egypt. Located on the west bank of the River Nile in Edfu, the temple was completely preserved, roof and all, when it was filled by desert sand.

The temple’s facades are decorated with important inscriptions regarding the language, myth and religion during the Hellenistic period in Egypt. The inscriptions also interestingly provide details of its construction.

Of the temples dedicated to the god, Horus, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is the largest and has become the centre of many festivals sacred to this god. The approach of the temple is hugely impressive with a huge 36-metre-high gateway guarded by two grand granite statues of Horus as a falcon.

Constructed during the Ptolemaic period, the Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusually unique double temple standing on a promontory on one of the Nile’s meanders. The temple is known for being the place where sacred crocodiles would bask on the river’s edge in ancient times.

This ancient place of worship is also known for its unique engraving that is said to be one of the first representations of medical and surgical instruments. The temple has a twin dedication – one to the local crocodile god Sobek, and Haroeris meaning Horus the Elder.

The twin dedication is represented in the temple’s twin layout; there are twin entrances, two linked hypostyle halls with the two gods represented by carvings on either side and twin sanctuaries.

Found in a granite quarry in southern Aswan, the Unfinished Obelisk -if finished- would have been the largest piece of stone that humans had ever built.

The ancient stone quarries in the Upper Egyptian city of Aswan were the first sources of Ancient Egypt’s finest granite. The northern quarries of Aswan are where the remains of the Unfinished Obelisk sits.

Had it been erected, the obelisk would have reached a height of 42 metres and at 1168 tonnes, it would have been the single heaviest piece of stone the Egyptians ever made. The work is suspected to have been abandoned on the obelisk due to the crack that began to appear in the granite.

Elephantine is an island situated on the River Nile, part of the city of Aswan in southern Egypt. The name in ancient Egyptian comes from the words meaning elephant and ivory which demonstrates the island’s once important role in the ivory trade.

As well as many archaeological sites on the island, such as the site of ancient Abu, Elephantine is home to the Nubian villages of Siou and Koti. The villages are home to stunning painted Nubian houses where the owners serve tea and serve other handicrafts. You can sail across to Elephantine Island by Felucca, a small traditional boat propelled by oars or lateen sails, used on the River Nile.

During the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s, a large number of the Monuments of Nubia were threatened. The Nubia Museum was established and opened in 1997 as an act of UNESCO International Campaign for the Establishment of the Nubia Museum and also the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo

The museum is home to amazing finds which were uncovered during the excavations to save the Nubia monuments. As well as showcasing over 3,000 ancient objects, the museum also serves as a rich resource for the history and culture of Nubia from prehistory to the present day.

Situated on the banks of the River Nile in Aswan, the museum occupies as an area of 50,000 square metres and is finished in local sandstone and pink granite, designed to be reminiscent of traditional Nubian village architecture.

Located 280 kilometres south of Aswan, you’ll find the Abu Simbel Temples. The site is home to two temples built by the Egyptian King Ramses II originally carved into the into the mountainside during the reign of the king in the 13th century BC.

The Abu Simbel Temple form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Nubian Monuments”. The rock figures, four colossal statues of Ramses, serve as a lasting monument to the king and queen. They have become iconic in all their well-preserved glory standing in front of the main temple as spectacular examples of ancient Egyptian art.

During the 1960s, the construction of the Aswan High Dam put these temples at risk so they became part of the convention by UNESCO World Heritage to save them from the rising waters of the River Nile. A huge engineering feat like this was necessary to prevent these temples becoming submerged by the creation of Lake Nasser, the artificial lake caused by the Aswan High Dam.

Eclipsing the previously built ‘Aswan Low Dam’ which was constructed further downstream in 1902, the Aswan High Dam as its now commonly known was built across the Nile between 1960 and 1970.

Whilst the first ‘low dam’ provided invaluable irrigation to the lands during droughts, it was not sufficient enough to prevent the annual flood of the mighty Nile. Envisioned by Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, in the 1950s, he wanted the Aswan High Dam to be large enough to end the flooding and provide electric power to most of Egypt.

The rockfill dam was completed in 1970 and sits at 111 metres high. Impounded a reservoir now known as Lake Nasser, the dam has created a reserve of water which backs up 200 miles up the Nile. In the construction of the dam, a hugely costly effort was made to move the ancient Egyptian temple complex of Abu Simbel which would have otherwise been submerged.

(peasants) and Sudanese Nubian nomads, as well as 50,000
Egyptians were relocated.

Philae is an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Dam, Egypt’s southernmost city. This rocky island was home to a beautiful and magnificent temple built by the ancient Egyptians centuries ago. However, when the Aswan Dam was built in 1906, this area was at the constant mercy of the floods caused by the dam.

Finally, in 1971, the temple, under the instruction of UNESCO and with the cooperation of several nations, was moved to Agilika Island. Moving the temple protected it whilst the nation waited for the completion of the Aswan High Dam to level to water in the area.

The new island was reshaped to imitate Philae Island as closely as possible. The temple was dismantled stone by stone, each one numbered correctly then replaced in the same position in the new location. This massive project took over 9 years to be accomplished. The Temple of Philae was reopened in 1980.

Situated in the centre of Cairo, the Salah El Din Citadel is a well-preserved medieval Islamic fortress which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1976.

The fortification houses three mosques, a museum and a garden which makes the grand complex well worth a visit, the impressive Mohamad Ali Mosque among the most famous.

Construction of the fortress began in 1176 following a successful war in which Saladin was able to take enemies captive and use them to help build the citadel. The monument was built to stand the test of time and be a strong testimonial to the power of the Ayyubid dynasty. Aiming to cement his name in history, the Citadal was named after Saladin himself. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids that sit within the Giza Necropolis. The site of Saqqara remained an important burial and ceremony site for more than 3,000 years, well into the Roman times. Often known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids that sit within the Giza Necropolis. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Giza is also particularly special as it is one of the oldest and most well-preserved of these seven.

Egyptologists, an archaeologist that specialises in the study of Ancient Egypt, date the Great Pyramid of Giza as being built over a 10-20 year period and being completed around 2560 BC, due to a marking on the interior chamber. At an original height of 146.5 metres, the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. What you see today is the underlying structure as once the pyramid was covered in smooth limestone.

Within the Great Pyramid, there are three chambers, the Queen’s and King’s chamber being higher up the Pyramid.

A major library and cultural centre, the Library of Alexandria is located on the shores of the Mediterranean in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. The modern library is in commemoration to the greatest loss in human history, the Ancient Library of Alexandria that was thought to have been home to the greatest collection of “books” of all time, destroyed by Julius Caesar in 48 BCE.

Home to over eight million books with a huge reading room spread over 20,000 square metres on a staggering 11 cascading levels, the library’s architecture is simply stunning. Above the main reading room, you’ll find a 32-metre-high glass-panelled roof which is tilted towards the sea like a giant sundial.

The library features a conference centre, specialised libraries for this that are blind or visually impaired, four museums, four art galleries, 15 permanent exhibitions and a planetarium – simply huge!

It is one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world; the archives are dedicated to the preservation of artefacts and education of the ancient civilizations in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Syria, Asia Minor, and Greece.

Established in 1477 AD by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa’it Bay, Qaitbay Citadel is a defensive fortress which is perched on the shores of the Mediterranean at the on harbour opening in the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria.

This prominent landmark was considered one of the most important defensive strongholds in Egypt and was built on the exact site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The fortress you see today is not the original; the original was damaged badly during the uprising against British hegemony in 1882 and rebuilt once again during the turn of the 20th century. Today, it houses a naval museum and is worth visiting to imagine the grand structure that one stood here on its foundations.

Said to have been discovered accidentally in 1900 when a donkey hauling a stone card fell through the ground revealing the space beneath, these catacombs make up one of Egypt’s largest known Roman burial sites.

Spread over three floors, the catacombs consist of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects which are said to belong to the Pharaonic funeral cult and have strong Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences.

You’ll begin the descent into the catacombs via a spiral staircase which would have been once used to transport the dead bodies down into the space which is 35 metres deep. The tombs here were tunnels into the bedrock supposedly during the 2nd century; it was used as a burial chamber for two centuries.

The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are said to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval Ages.

The biggest memorial column in Egypt, Pompey’s Pillar or the Memorial of Diocletian as its officially known, stretches a height of 28 metres and 2.7 metres in diameter made entirely of red granite.

The column was erected between 284 and 305 out of gratitude for Emporer Diocletian. Following the surrender of Alexandria to Roman rule after 8 months of resistance, the city fell into famine. Emperor Diocletian ordered for a portion of the corn that was usually sent to Rome to be given to the people and he also exempted them from paying tax during these hard time.s

The column’s nickname, Pompey’s Pillar, is the result of the Crusaders during the Middle Ages mistakenly believing that the remains of the great Roman general Pompey lay at the top of the column in a pot.

On the upper part of the column, there is an inscription in Greek, which reads: ‘to the most just Emperor, tutelary of Alexandria Diocletian, the invincible, Postumus, the Prefect of Egypt (who erected this monument).’

Also commonly known as El Nabatat Island or the Botanical Island, Kitchener’s Island is situated on the River Nile at Aswan. The island itself is less than a kilometre long and home to the stunning Aswan Botanical Garden.

Kitchener’s Island is one of two most important islands near Aswan but is often dwarfed by the larger Elephantine island which sits between the two. The island was originally named after Lord Kitchener who was gifted the island after serving as the Consul-General in Egypt during the early 20th century.

Under his ownership, Kitchener transformed the tiny island into an exotic paradise of trees and plants imported from India into a garden filled with walkways and flowers. Now the property of the Egyptian government, Aswan Botanical Garden is beautiful where the tropical plants and trees can be enjoyed in peace away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

This morning, you’ll visit Philae, an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Dam, was home to a beautiful and magnificent temple built by the ancient Egyptians centuries ago. After lunch, you’ll see the amazing Aswan Dam, fed by the Nile River and utilises the power of the river for a variety of social and economic causes. There are actually two dams, the Aswan High Dam and the Aswan Low Dam, both of which work together to prevent the annual large floods from the Nile.

Philae is an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Dam, Egypt’s southernmost city. This rocky island was home to a beautiful and magnificent temple built by the ancient Egyptians centuries ago. However, when the Aswan Dam was built in 1906, this area was at the constant mercy of the floods caused by the dam.

Finally, in 1971, the temple, under the instruction of UNESCO and with the cooperation of several nations, was moved to Agilika Island. Moving the temple protected it whilst the nation waited for the completion of the Aswan High Dam to level to water in the area.

The new island was reshaped to imitate Philae Island as closely as possible. The temple was dismantled stone by stone, each one numbered correctly then replaced in the same position in the new location. This massive project took over 9 years to be accomplished. The Temple of Philae was reopened in 1980.

Eclipsing the previously built ‘Aswan Low Dam’ which was constructed further downstream in 1902, the Aswan High Dam as its now commonly known was built across the Nile between 1960 and 1970.

Whilst the first ‘low dam’ provided invaluable irrigation to the lands during droughts, it was not sufficient enough to prevent the annual flood of the mighty Nile. Envisioned by Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, in the 1950s, he wanted the Aswan High Dam to be large enough to end the flooding and provide electric power to most of Egypt.

The rockfill dam was completed in 1970 and sits at 111 metres high. Impounded a reservoir now known as Lake Nasser, the dam has created a reserve of water which backs up 200 miles up the Nile. In the construction of the dam, a hugely costly effort was made to move the ancient Egyptian temple complex of Abu Simbel which would have otherwise been submerged.

Along with the temples, a huge 90,000 Egyptian fellahin (peasants) and Sudanese Nubian nomads, as well as 50,000 Egyptians were relocated.

On this road trip to Luxor, you’ll visit the unique double temple of Kom Ombo dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god, and Horus the falcon-headed god. Constructed during the Ptolemaic period, the Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusually unique double temple standing on a promontory on one of the Nile’s meanders. The temple is known for being the place where sacred crocodiles would bask on the river’s edge in ancient times.

This ancient place of worship is also known for its unique engraving that is said to be one of the first representations of medical and surgical instruments. The temple has a twin dedication – one to the local crocodile god Sobek, and Haroeris meaning Horus the Elder.

The twin dedication is represented in the temple’s twin layout; there are twin entrances, two linked hypostyle halls with the two gods represented by carvings on either side and twin sanctuaries.

Built between 237 and 57 BC, this Ptolemaic temple known as the Temple of Horus is one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Egypt. Located on the west bank of the River Nile in Edfu, the temple was completely preserved, roof and all, when it was filled by desert sand.

The temple’s facades are decorated with important inscriptions regarding the language, myth and religion during the Hellenistic period in Egypt. The inscriptions also interestingly provide details of its construction.

Of the temples dedicated to the god, Horus, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is the largest and has become the centre of many festivals sacred to this god. The approach of the temple is hugely impressive with a huge 36-metre-high gateway guarded by two grand granite statues of Horus as a falcon.

The Valley of the Kings was the pharaohs burial site from 1539–1075 BCE. The tombs have descending corridors and deep shafts covered in sculptures and colourful scenes depicting the dead king. After that tour, you’ll visit the beautiful Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, built by Queen Hatshepsut, the first female monarch. Lastly, you’ll visit the Colossi of Memnon rising majestically about 18 metres from the plain, a pair of giant stone statues guarding the entrance to Amenhotep’s Mortuary temple.

Also known as the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings, this area is a long narrow canyon west of the River Nile, once part of the ancient city of Thebes. The Valley of the Kings is the burial site of almost all of the pharaohs from the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties of Egypt which spanned 1539–1075 BCE.

The area is home to 62 tombs, of those that are known, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979 as part of ancient Thebes encompassing Luxor, the Valley of the Queens, and Karnak also.

Fearing the safety of their burials, the kings from this era planned to conceal their tombs in the valley sunken deep into the mountain. The tombs, built in the style of a descending corridor were ridden with deep shafts to baffle thieves.

The walls of the tombs are covered in sculptures and colourful scenes depicting the dead king in the presence of deities. Many of the temples were pillaged during the 21st dynasty, recycled for later use or cleared out to reuse the goods in the royal treasury.

However, one tomb, that of Tutankhamun, who reigned from 1333-23 BCE was concealed and protected by rocks. This lead to the discovery of grand cultural importance in 1922. Many of the artefacts collected from the tomb can now be seen in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Commonly known as the Djeser-Djeseru, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is an ancient Egyptian temple built for the pharaoh Hatshepsut from the 18th dynasty, not far from the Valley of the Kings. Currently, under restoration, Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is considered one of the incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt and features three stunning terraces cut into the rock face.

Located in the west of the ancient city of Thebes, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is arguably one of the most beautiful of its kind. It was built by Queen Hatshepsut who was known as the first female monarch, ruling for over two decades. Her death is one of mystery as many of the paintings were destroyed which gestures to the fact it may have been ordered by the next ruler in line.

The three layers of the temple reach 29.5 metres tall and the temple is said to have taken 15 years to complete. The site of the temple was chosen strategically by Queen Hatshepsut due to its location in the valley that was considered sacred for over 500 years and its proximity to the tomb she had ordered to the excavated for herself in the adjacent Valley of the Kings.

Stood west of the River Nile in the city of Luxor in the Theban Necropolis, you’ll find two huge stones statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Dynasty XVIII, known as the Colossi of Memnon.

These statues have stood since 1350 BC, over 3,400 years. Cut from a single block of stone weighing over 1,000 tonnes, they are the first monuments of the necropolis that tourists see upon arrival. The two faceless statues sit at the eastern entrance to the funerary temple of Amenophis III, the largest on the west bank.

Located on the eastern side of the River Nile, Luxor Temple is a large ancient Egyptian temple that was of great importance in the ancient capital city of Thebes, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Constructed around 1400 BCE, the Luxor temple is different to many of the others in the area as it is not dedicated to a god to deity, instead, it is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship and perhaps was the site where the kings of Egypt were crowned.

The temple’s excavation was a huge process due to the years of settlements and building that had occurred on top of it. Beginning in 1884, the temple was sporadically excavated over the period up to 1960; a period which revealed that three-quarters of the temple had been buried under the centuries of rubble.

The temple is very popular during the sunset hour and at night when it is lit up.

The Karnack Temple Complex, situated not far from Luxor City, is a vast and varied mix of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. Karnak forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site which was designated to the ancient Thebes area in 1979.

Karnak is a city of temples whose lifespan dated over 2,000 years from 2055 BC to around 100 AD. In its heyday, this temple complex would have overshadowed all of the wonders of the ancient world. It was one of ancient Egypt’s grandest building projects which has firmly secured itself in the history books.

Whilst the pharaohs may be long gone, the colossal importance of this site lives on in the awe-inspiring landmarks through the Karnak complex and the huge complex of stone statues and staggering columns.

Whilst the main building is the Great Temple of Amun, there are many other temples and important buildings scattered around it. The avenue of sphinxs welcomes you into the complex with its grand walkway flanked on both sides by ramheaded sphinxes. Interestingly, the Hypostyle Hall is still the largest room of any religious building in the world at 54,000 square feet and featuring 134 columns.

The largest in the country, Hassan II Mosque is a momentous dedication to the Islamic religion. Facing the Hassan Tower, standing tall on the Yacoub alMansour esplanade, is the mausoleum of late Mohammed V. Completed in 1971, it contains the tombs of the Moroccan King and his two sons, late King Hassan II and Prince Abdallah.

The building is considered a masterpiece of modern Alaouite dynasty architecture, with its white silhouette, detailed features and topped by a traditional green tiled roof; green being the symbolic colour of Islam as within the holy scripture the Quran, it is associated with Paradise.

Situated in the capital city of Rabat, Hassan tower is the minaret of an incomplete mosque. Construction began in 1195 and was intended to the the world’s largest minaret along with the mosque, also as the world’s largest. However, the death of Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur in 1199 halted the construction at 44 metres, 42 metres short of what it was intended to be.

The mosque was also left incomplete with only the beginnings of several walls and 348 columns constructed. The Hassan Tower along with the incomplete mosque and the modern Mausoleum of Mohammed V form an important historical and tourist complex in Rabat.

Along the Bou Regreg River, the Kasbah of the Oudayas was built in the 12th century, during the reign of the Almohad Caliphate.

When the Almohads had seized Rabat and destroyed the Kasbah of the Almoravid Dynasty in the town, they began to reconstruct it between AH 544 and AD 1150. With the addition of a palace and a mosque, it was renamed it al-Mahdiyya, after their ancestor al-Mahdi Ibn Tumart. The Kasbah is now largely abandoned.

You will have the opportunity to visit the old-fashioned Moorish gardens, stop in a traditional coffee house for mint tea, and in between, explore the Oudaya museum of tribal arts and crafts where you will be introduced to traditional Berber textiles.

After breakfast in Chefchaoun, you will continue on our trip to eventually reach Fes. On the way, you will be visiting the Roman ruins of Volubilis before we continue to visit the city of Meknes and its monument, you’ll tour around some of the most significant sites in Meknes before finishing the day in your overnight destination, Fes.

Situated just outside the city of Meknes, Volubilis is a partly excavated Berber and Roman city which developed during the 3rd century BC as a Berber settlement before later becoming the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania.

Growing rapidly to 42 hectares encircled by 2.6 kilometres of walls during the Roman rule in the 1st century, the city also saw the addition of many major public buildings in the 2nd century; a basilica, temple and triumphal arch were of the many added.

The prosperous city fell as fast as it grew and in 285 it was taken by local tribes and never retaken by Rome; it lay inhabited for 700 years. Finally, in the 8th century, it became the seat of Idris ibn Abdallah, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and the state of Morocco, before being abandoned once again in the 11th century.

Up until the 18th century, many of the ruins remain intact but a huge earthquake followed by looted for stone for nearby Meknes left Volubilis devastated. During French rule in Morocco, the site was excavated revealed many fine mosaics, prominent public buildings and high-status houses, which were all restored or reconstructed. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Mellah Qdim, once the old Jewish quarter, the new Mellah has a modest synagogue frequented by a small community via Berrima.

Mellahs were first built in the city of Fez during the 15th century and soon spread across Morocco, originally intended to be a place of safety and protection for the Jewish people.

You sense the change in building styles once through the arch that separates the Mellah from the Medina.

A famous square throughout Morocco, Lahdim Square was built between 1672-1674 after the Sultan, Moulay Ismail, demolished half of the Old City of Meknes to accommodate his palace and the square. Lahdim is regarded as one of the most important sites in the city, a symbol of the national struggle for Moroccan people, having once been used as a gathering place for cultural, religious and political events.

At night, the square comes to life with numerous performers creating an atmosphere that is unlike anything you have seen before.

Bou Inania is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Marinid architecture.

With the advice from the leaders of Al-Qarawiyyin, Abou Inan, the last Sultan of the Marinid dynasty built the madrasa, it was the last building to be erected during the ruling of this dynasty, named after the sultan.

Upon completion, the madrasa was used as an educational centre and a congregational mosque; this is the reason that this madrasa became the only one to have a minaret, from which worshippers are called to prayer. The madrasa was, and still is, highly regarded as a Great Mosque. In spite of its reverence, it’s one of the few religious sites that non-Islamic visitors can enter.

Found opposite the Bou Inania Madrasa is the Dar al-Magana, a hydraulic clock that was built in conjunction with the madrasa.

The main entrance to Fes el Bali, Bab Bou Jeloud is an ornate beauty that dates back to the 12th century, although the name itself is much older.

The Moorish triple-arched gate is made up of polychrome tiles and Moroccan mosaic patterns in blue and green; the latter is representative of Islam. The gate encloses a square filled with shops and restaurants. Interestingly the gate door close from the inside, which is thought to have been a means of control from the French, rather than protection.

Situated in Fes el Bali, the old medina quarter in the city of Fes, the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts also known as Funduq al-Najjariyyin, is a building that was once used by merchants, traders and visitors to the city of Fes, providing a storage place for their goods, whilst they took lodgings on the floors above.

Now renovated to a museum, the central courtyard is reached through a monumental entrance of 5 metres tall and 3 metres wide, framed by a facade of floral and geometric designs and tilework.

The central courtyard is surrounding by a three-storey gallery which gives access to other rooms. Restored between 1990 and 1996, the building is now home to a diverse collection of wooden artefacts such as prayer beads, craftsmen’s tools, chests and musical instruments, all beautifully presented.

If you climb the final flight of stairs to the rooftop, you’ll be greeted with a wonderful view over the city of Fes.

The University, also one of the most highly revered places of worship in the country, is the oldest existing continually operating university in the world. The institution has been recognised by both UNESCO and Guinness World Records.

The grand building was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859 with another associated school. The building soon became one of the most notable spiritual and educational centres of the Islamic Golden Age, the first in the Islamic world.

The university focuses its studies and historical texts on Islamic religious and scientific laws, alongside traditional Arabic linguistics and the study of ancient Sunni law.

The architecture of the building has had many additions since it’s first construction over 1000 years ago, its original size was around 30 metres long, maintaining a rather simplistic design comparative to other Moroccan structures. However, the minaret was the first of its kind, forming the design and structure that is echoed throughout northern Africa.

Al-Qarawiyyin is the central point of focus for religious activity in Fes; it has been established through tradition that the mosques of Fes must hear the call to prayer from AlQarawiyyin before sounding their own call to prayer.

Flowing through the Ziz Gorges from Rich, the Ziz River brings rich greenery to the surrounding valley before puttering out in the dunes of the Merzouga desert. Originating in the High Atlas Mountains, the river flowers 282 kilometres finishing in the Sahara desert in Algeria.

The river, although intermittent at times, has long been used to facilitate human transit through the mountainous region. Er Rachidia, Erfoud and Sijilmassa are all cities that sit along the Ziz.

In the south, the Ziz Valley widens opening itself up to a fantastic sight of a dense canopy of palms sandwiched between ancient Jurassic period cliffs. It is definitely worth a visit just to take in this spectacular scenery.

Located in the Errachidia Province in eastern Morocco, Rissani is a town that once was a thriving desert capital. Here, fortunes including gold and slaves were traded between caravans during its heyday between the 14th and 18th centuries.

It was also home to the epic battle between the Filali, the ancestors of the ruling Alawite dynasty, and the Saadians, due to its strategic location.

On the outskirts of town, you’ll find the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, third great-grandfather of Moulay Cherif, founder of the Alaouite Dynasty of Morocco.

Today, the town consists of a single street and a square with a small percentage of the popular living in the 17th-century ksar. On Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, there are souks where you can see locals trading birds, sheep and desert jewellery.
