After breakfast at the hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to relax after your long journey to Vietnam or you can head out to discover the largest city in Vietnam. In a city that bustles 24 hours a day, there is plenty to see and do in Ho Chi Minh City. You can head to the War Remnants Museum or perhaps the famous pedestrian boulevard of Nguyen Hue where you can grab a spot on a cafe and watch the world go by. In the evening, you may want to catch the AO cultural show.

11

Ho Chi Minh City
09:00 to 16:00
7 hours

The largest metropolis in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City (locally known as Sai Gon) is a hub of excitement and activity. Through winding traffic, beeping horns and bright lights; the city never sleeps.

Navigating your way through District 1, the city’s business district, you’ll find most of the attractions alongside grand hotels that neighbour street food stalls and coffee shops that consist of the nothing more than a few miniature stools. The city exhibits a clear sign of major developments, with skyscrapers such as the infamous Bitexco yet never seems to leave the local feel, with small “quan” restaurants selling only one dish at every given opportunity.

Walking around in the Saigon heat of the south, you’ll find you can take a rest in one of the parks, hide from the sun in the air-con of a mall or get to know some locals who are looking to practice their English in a coffee shop.

This is the best way to take in the vibes of the city, along the way you’ll find traces of colonial rule in the oldest part of the city – District 1. If you want to go a little further, a day wondering around District 5 is a stunning insight into local culture and the remnants of the large Chinese area in the country.

20

Cu Chi Tunnels
09:00 to 11:00
2 hours

The Cu Chi Tunnels are a network of tunnels, stretching for over 200km, that became legendary during the 1960s. The tunnels played a vital part in the U.S.-Vietnam War in that they allowed the Viet Cong to control a large rural area only 30 to 40 km from Saigon. At its height, the tunnel system stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border.

The network, parts of which were several levels deep, included innumerable trap doors, specifically constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens. Today, the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience and feel of what underground life during the war must have been like.

The tunnels have been widened for our benefit (otherwise, we would not be able to enter them!). For those interested, there is even the opportunity to try an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range.

Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon
13:00 to 13:30
30 minutes

Officially Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception, the unique colour of this cathedral makes it stands out from its surroundings within the downtown part of the city.

Built between 1877 and 1883, Notre Dame Cathedral rises up romantically from the heart of Ho Chi Minh City facing Dong Khoi Road, one of the oldest streets in what was once Saigon. This reddish brick, neo-Romanesque church is fronted by two square towers topped with iron spires, surrounded by gardens and a statue of the Virgin Mary.

All of the building materials were imported from France; the exterior of the cathedral was made with bricks from Toulouse. Although the contractor did not use coated concrete, these bricks have retained their bright red colour until today. The walls of the interior are inlaid with devotional tablets and some stained glass windows.

Saigon Central Post Office

Neighbouring the basilica is the city’s post office, a typical example of French-colonialist architecture that is emblematic of the city.

Designed by Alfred Foulhoux, the post office is often erroneously credited as being the work of Gustave Eiffel, or a collaboration between Foulhoux and Hanoi-based Auguste Henri Vildieu.

The Gothic-styled Saigon Central Post Office began its life in 1886 and remains one of the country’s most celebrated structures. Inside, beneath a long, domed roof, the walls decorated with French colonial maps met by a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, while the elaborately tiled floors complete the refined look, typical of the era. Today, the post office not only remains fully functional but impressively well-preserved.

22

War Remnants Museum
14:00 to 16:00
2 hours

The War Remnants Museum is in the former US Information Service building and was formerly the Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes.

Many of the atrocities documented here were well publicised, but rarely do Westerners hear the victims of US military action tell their own stories. While some displays are one-sided, many of the most disturbing photographs illustrating US atrocities are from US sources, including those of the infamous My Lai Massacre.

The ground floor of the museum is devoted to a collection of posters and photographs showing support for the antiwar movement internationally. The Requiem Exhibition is upstairs and was compiled by the legendary war photographer, Tim Page. This collection documents the work of photographers killed during the conflict, on both sides, and includes works by Larry Burrows and Robert Capa.

On display outside are US armoured vehicles, artillery pieces, bombs and infantry weapons. One corner of the grounds is devoted to the notorious French and South Vietnamese prisons on Phu Quoc and Con Son Islands. Artefacts include the most iconic of French appliances, the guillotine, and the notoriously inhumane ‘tiger cages’ used to house war prisoners.

Ben Thanh Market
16:00 to 17:00
1 hour

Ben Thanh Market is a large marketplace in central Ho Chi Minh City and one of the most famous landmarks of the city. The market is one of the earliest surviving structures of old Saigon and an important symbol of Ho Chi Minh City, popular with tourists seeking local handicrafts, textiles, ao dai and souvenirs, as well as local cuisine.

The market was developed by locals from surrounding informal markets in the early 17th century. Street vendors would gather together every day near the Saigon River. The market was formally established by the French colonialists after taking over the Gia Dinh Citadel in 1859.

It was destroyed by fire in 1870 and rebuilt to become Saigon’s largest market at the time. In 1912 it was moved to the New Ben Thanh Market to distinguish over its predecessor. It was since renovated to be the building you see today.

Some say that if you have not visited the floating market, you have not visited the southwest of Vietnam – we believe that is true as if you have not been to the market, socialised with the locals and tried some of their food, you haven’t experienced Vietnam.

Reaching its prime in the early hours before the sun is at its strongest, locals from the surrounding areas dock their boats to sell their wares: from fruits, vegetables and meats to flowers, kitchen supplies and breakfast foods, similar to other markets, you can find just about anything.

Your hour-long cyclo tour takes you through the ancient streets with street names that amusingly translate to ‘mattress’ or ‘fish’.

Today, it is a thriving tourist area for those wishing to witness an architectural timeline of Hanoi’s activity. From morning ’til night, the streets are bustling with tourists marvelling at French-colonial architecture while locals sip on coffee and Bia Hoi on street corners, the perfect opportunity for some people watching.

From your cyclo, you’ll have a great opportunity to witness the romantic aura of the yellowish tinge of the buildings coupled with green shutters while your driver takes you around the city streets. Cyclo’s were a popular form of transportation in the northern cities, now a great way to observe one of the oldest areas in the country.

Water Puppet Show

The Water Puppet Show is a traditional performance that dates back as far as the 11th century. It originated in the villages of the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. Today’s Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique variation on the ancient puppet tradition.

The puppets are made out of wood and then lacquered for a polished finish. The show originates from flood days on the rice paddies; farmers could not work due to the high waters, so chose to entertain each other with puppets that danced along the waters, the puppeteers would be waist-deep in water.

Large bamboo rod supports are used by puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen controlling them, telling stories of rural life in Vietnam and folklore tales.

Wat Visoun
08:00 to 09:00
1 hour

The oldest continuously running temple in Laos, Wat Visoun is named after the former king, who took reign of the former Lan Xang, from 1500 to 1520. It is estimated that the temple was built in 1513 to house the Prabang Buddhas.

Having originally been crafted from wood, the temple faced destruction in 1887, when it was burned by Black Haw riders, who were part of the Black Flag military rebel group led by a Chinese commander.

After the invasion, it was rebuilt in more robust materials; stucco and brick. The temple still has some of the original parts that were not damaged, including a stupa and some small Buddha icons – many were stolen during the Haw raid.

The design of the windows are known to be similar to those that can be found in Wat Phou in Champasak. Inside the complex, you’ll also find a stupa that is commonly known as the Watermelon Stupa, because of its shape.

Wat Aham
09:00 to 10:00
1 hour

Adjacent to Wat Visoun, Wat Aham is the serene “Monastery of the Open Heart”. Standing proudly in Sim-style, the date of the temples’ construction is unknown, although it is estimated that it was in the early 19th century, during the reign of King Manthatourath.

The Sim is rather simple, with defined symmetry and Ramayana figures, Hanuman and Ravana on the front porch. Dowsed in red and gold, the interiors are dazzlingly colourful.

The history of this site dates back to the 16th century when the country leaders of the time were in great conflict with the importance of religion for the people. A shrine was built to worship the spiritual guardians of Luang Prabang; religious ceremonies towards the spirits were banned and a Buddhist monastery was built – crises fell upon Luang Prabang. Finally, the guardian shrine was rebuilt and Buddhism remained in harmony.

The spirit shrine was finally destroyed in the 20th century, however, the spirits had come to embody banyan trees in the monastery gardens, so their presence would not leave the site. Although the temple is not a hub of activity, its history retains its importance as a site of the development of religion in Luang Prabang.

Wat Xiengthong

Although many additions and some renovations have been done, much of the original temple remains.

As one of the most highly architecturally revered buildings in Luang Prabang, there are many beautiful parts to discover, the temple gradually unfolds itself, with artistry to be found on every corner. The main highlight has to be the enormous funeral carriage that was once walked along the streets of Luang Prabang to pay respect to those who had passed.

Regarded as a national symbol and one of the most important Buddhist monuments in Laos, Pha That Luang has undergone a lot of reconstruction due to foreign invasions over the centuries. In fact, over the years it has seen many transformations before it fell to ruin as a Khmer temple in the 13th century.

When Vientiane became the capital of Laos in the 16th century, King Setthathirat ordered the construction of Pha That Luang at the end of the road of the same name, it was surrounded by 30 smaller stupas. The temple contains many references to Lao culture and identity as well as its dedication to Buddhism which inherently gave its importance.

Over the years the stupa was attacked by the Burmese, Siamese and Chinese before being almost completed destroyed in 1828. The French eventually restored it in 1900 based on drawings from a French architect from 1867. After the Franco-Thai War and World War II, it was restored once more.
